MK5 coaches?

On wikipedia (I think) ages ago it had an article and come artist renders of the proposed MK5 coaches...

I think they was gonna be similar to the MK4s but be able to run at 155Mph or summit, and replace the MK1s (I think)

Does anyone have any info these coaches that never made it into production?

FYI BR planned to withdraw the Mk1 coaches from service gradually. The process started in the late 1980s with the introduction of the class 155s and 156s on provincial routes such as Cardiff-Gloucester-Birmingham NS and Cardiff-Pompey. Introduction of further DMU classes such as the 150s and 158s allowed more to be withdrawn.

The Networker family of EMUs proposed for NSE would have seen the Mk1 based EMUs (e.g. 307s, 312s, 411s, 421s, 423s) withdrawn. When privatisation happened that all went to pot.

I can guarantee you that these mk5s would still not beat a mk3, but perhaps they would be better than the 390s you got instead...

I agree. I think that they would have been a waste aswell. The WCML is still only 125Mph which in a way makes the 390s pointless!

Before the 390s came along it was 110mph maximum with a lot of lower speeds too especially on the northern end of the line. 390s pointless? not really in the respect of them being much faster than the old loco hauled trains. I still prefered the loco hauled trains though....

The other point is at the Northern end of the line you still can't get a HST upto 125mph due to it been too curvy. We had 2 choices to speed up the WCML, tilting trains or build a new line. It looks like we would have been better going for the latter but that is a different debate.

But the IC250 plan was also going to see some upgrades to the WCML, with a number of curves straightened and even some small sections of new alignment. Whilst it might not seem much it was enough for the IC250 to have the higher planned speed.

If the APTs had entered squadron service on the WCML, then the Intercity 250 project would have been made redundant. Now Pendolinos (which use technology developed by BREL but sold to Fiat because the funds or political will to build more APTs wasn't forthcoming) are used .
