Mitcham Eastfields

For anyone interested, Mitcham Eastfields FC/SN station in South London will not be opening tomorrow [Monday] as planned. Buses will run between Mitcham Eastfields and Mitcham Junction from 06:00 to 10:00 for passengers who are not aware of the delay to opening. As yet there is no word as to when it will open, other than "It is anticipated that the station will open shortly after 2nd June".

There's an ongoing 'Mitcham Eastfields - Latest' page on the Southern website that will be updated as and when further information is available.

I suspect a few people will be looking at the design of this 'Modular' station for use at other locations in the country. I certaintly know it is something Bristol have brought up with Network Rail for their proposals for a new station at Shirehampton Park and Ride.

I seem to recall reading that Effingham Junction is to be rebuilt at some point as a modular station.

The consultation over it is mentioned in this month's Modern Railways, the locals aren't terribly keen on its aesthetics.

Yes, from Railway Gazette: "Effingham Junction and Greenhithe stations are being rebuilt using the system, and a new station will be built in Corby for a planned East Midlands Trains' service."

what i find is strange for a station in the greater london area is that the station is staggered on either side of the eastfields cctv level crossing, the traffic backed up is very busy at peak times so wont having a staggered platform cause more congestion.

Its can be backed right up to London Road/Streatham Road even at 23:00 at night as I have found trying to get home from work that way.

That crossing can be a nightmare and with trains now slowing to stop it will be even worse.

I guess it's so that the barriers can go up as soon as the train has cleared the crossing prior to stopping, rather than the barriers going down prior to the train arriving and then staying down during the train's station stop before only then clearing the crossing and allowing the barriers to raise.

It turns out the delay is not too long afterall. The station opened at 16:00 for Southern services only, commencing with 2E72 at 16:09 (15:50 Victoria to Epsom 16:32) and 2E71 at 16:11 (15:48 Epsom to Victoria 16:29).

First Capital Connect services are expected to commence calling at the station tomorrow.

Barriers for CCTV level crossings are interlocked with signals and when I signed that route the signals were not that close to the crossing. Has the are been resignalled?
