I'm sure they would have got permission for this rather than just "on their own accord". Setting back on a busy high speed line past at least one signal and a junction is asking for trouble and would be a serious offence even in the less strict times of the 80s. Ending up in the western platform suggests that the signalman routed them there.
Indeed it would have been an agreed move. However due to the length of the overshoot i was surprised that we weren't taken onto Newark and put on a service train to return. In hindsight maybe i should've pulled the cord earlier on... :|

I remember being on a 142 that almost overshot Mirfield a few years ago. The rear door of the unit was still on the platform so the Guard did a PA asking all passengers to use that door to disembark.

A few years ago, I was aboard an early-ish morning HST from Plymouth to London which was booked to stop at all stations from Newton Abbot to Exeter EXCEPT Dawlish Warren. Having left Dawlish and gone past Dawlish Warren on the through lines, the driver clearly thought he was fast all the way to Exeter St Davids and only realised his mistake as the handful of waiting passengers moved forward at Starcross.
Sadly the "oh b******s" brake application left the rear power car some ten yards off the platform and after a short delay, we chugged off to Exeter. The guard made a joke of it over the pa and I don't think anyone wanted off at Starcross anyway, but I'm not sure what the passengers waiting in the rain at Starcross (always a draughty place) thought of it!

This train still runs (albeit from Paignton now). It is bizarre it does not do Dawlish Warren as the down equivalent of it does. Poor Dawlish Warren :P

if the station overrun is less than 400m and doesnt pass a junction or level crossing a signaller may authorise a driver to set back into a station. Over 400m the train is not permitted and must continue forward. some TOCs have a far more dim view of overruns than others as they feel its a precursor to a more serious incident.

Not wishing to be too pedantic, but the Rule Book makes no mention of any restriction on setting back over a level crossing (used to prohibit it over an automatic crossing, I think?) or junction. 400m/440yds is indeed the maximum distance (in theory ;) ) that such a movement may be authorised over (for a station overrun) though.

I've had three experiences of an overshoot.

First one was at Newcastle Central, one of the East Coast drivers managed to overshoot platform 4 by two carriages. People still tried to open the doors though even though there was no platform. As it was then blocking a train from Platform 3 which was departing first we were told to go across the bridges to go back into the station. Arrived 14 minutes late after crossing back over the bridges.

Second time, on a certain Southern TOC (not actually Southern) the driver misjudged the braking distance, and all the passengers could hear was 'Clunk'. The driver had managed to couple up to the unit that was already occupying part of the platform, thankfully that seemed to stop us because as soon as we heard the 'clunk' of the trains connecting we came to a sudden stop. The driver apoligised, saying 'Sorry about that, some people think it's funny to just park a train in the middle of a platform.' The train in front was about 1 coach away from the buffers, and thankfully for the driver everyone had a laugh about it, one person said 'Trains bang on time for a change, although I don't want to go through that every morning just for my train to be on time.'

Third time was on the T&W Metro, the driver managed to miss two stations. They missed Gateshead, and then Monument. Monument was a slight over run but Gateshead we had no chance of stopping in time, in fact by the time we would have stopped we probably would have only had the rear two doors of the train on the platform. At Monument they managed to overshoot, but it was only the front set of doors and the driver got out and isolated them just for that stop. They still work for Metro though (4 years on).

I have missed Hebburn on the Metro, but that was due to some 'uneducated youths' spreading leaves across the tracks, obviously they knew it caused serious wheelslip and we ended up just missing the station altogether. I do believe the station was then closed at police request. Driver couldn't be blamed for that one though.
