Simple question: can anyone find a reason why there are no 1st Advance fares on the Nottingham - Luton flow? They are available to Bedford and London on the same trains...

Maybe sold out on the trains you wanted? I have found two on Journey planner on my star ticket system for example 19/12/12 on the 16.28 from nottingham priced at £22 and £30 with zero changes.
The reason could be that very few EMT services from Nottingham to London actually stop at Luton and so a change of train at Bedford is usually required.
There are always cheap tickets both standard and 1st class on the 1628 from Nottingham as that is one of the few trains of the day that actually calls at Luton.
You will, however, find that there are plenty of AP tickets available between Nottingham and Luton Airport Parkway because an hourly Nottingham to London train does call there.

I think I've got to the bottom of this conspiracy.
The Nottingham - Luton flow only has First Class Advances routed East Midlands Trains Only so any itinerary with a change onto FCC at Bedford will mean these fares aren't offered. As pointed out, there are few direct Nottingham-Luton trains. However there are Standard Class fares routed EMT&Connections so it is not surprising that you can find an abundance of Standard Class Advances for this flow.
Using a WebTIS-based site and selecting "East Midlands Trains Only" from the "other routes" part of the Mixing Deck may yield First Advances, but may involve a substantial wait at Bedford for the next EMT service to Luton.
I would instead buy a First Advance to Luton Airport and a separate ticket to go "back" to Luton. This will be much quicker and hassle-free, and only marginally more expensive.
