The Routeing Guide currently contains the following easement:
Unfortunately this does not seem to apply more generally to journeys between Havant/Bedhampton and Cosham. Does anyone know if there was such an easement in the past? If so, when and why was it removed?
Both Cosham and Fratton are members of Portsmouth Group, but the rules on doubling back through group stations don't apply to the origin or destination. The double-back is longer than 3 miles, so that doesn't cover it. Nonetheless, put Waterloo-Cosham into NRE and it will happily give you an itinerary via Guildford and changing at Fratton (which in fact faster than the direct train via Eastleigh) and point you to the off-peak return.
However, put Coventry-Cosham into NRE, and it'll give you an itinerary for Coventry-Euston-Waterloo-(Guildford)-Fratton-Cosham but won't show the £74.20 +Via London off-peak return. I can't believe a guard wouldn't accept it, but is it in fact the case that one is technically not allowed to double back at Fratton (unless you've come from Chichester or beyond)?
Given that there are only two (irregularly spaced) trains per hour between Havant and Cosham, this seems rather unfair. Is there some mechanism for requesting changes to the Routeing Guide to fix this kind of anomaly?
700007 Customers travelling between Chichester and Cosham may double back between Hilsea and Fratton.
This easement applies in both directions.
