Minimum transfer time at Edinburgh Waverley

Could one of the many knowledgeable forum members please confirm the minimum connection time between trains at Edinburgh Waverley? TIA.

BR Times says 10 minutes. This is the minimum but personally I would prefer a longer connection, as the platform layout is quite strange

I would go for longer, I normally allow about 15 unless you are used to how they number their platforms. It does make sense if you have used Waverley a few times.

I'd agree with @Trainmiles above. I use Edinburgh a lot so feel confident enough that I can do it quicker than 10 minutes, however if possible I prefer to leave longer.

Thanks for the diagram - it makes a little more sense of a very unusual layout, where 1 and 2 are right next to 19 and 20!

It is possible to request additional interchange time when booking a ticket.

If you book online, Trainsplit provides this facility.

Alternatively if you use NRE (which also has this function) to plan a journey, some of the providers it links to will honour the itienraries generated by NRE.

Have been caught out changing trains at Edinburgh in the past, when it hasn't been a simple cross-platform transfer, for example, from Platform 8 to 14. My own fault though, as should probably have changed at Haymarket.

Haymarket is preferable where possible. It can also be cheaper than Edinburgh itself for some journeys, as some of us know.

For a long time I too thought the platform numbering was strange until it dawned on me that the platforms are simply numbered from 1 in a clockwise manner. Knowing this it becomes much easier to navigate.

Where are you planning to arrive from/depart to?
As others have said between 10-15mins can be needed but this can alter dependent on what connection your looking for.

What I want is the minimum BR interchange time when through ticketing via this station. I am about to start my next series of trips from Princes Risborough to Glenrothes or vice versa and wanted the minimum guaranteed interchange time for delay repay purposes at Waverley. One poster has quoted 10 mins which seems tight The layout is confusing but I’ve managed OK so far!

Official minimum connection time at Edinburgh is indeed 10 minutes. Depending on which platforms you are interchanging between, this can indeed be either very generous, or very tight!

Not if I’m split ticketing via 2 separate retailers it won’t which is what I usually do as it works out cheaper, hence my question re minimum interchange time.

I used Waverley for the first time last week. Only departing, and not changing. I'd recommend at least 10 minutes and probably more if you don't know the station. It took me a long time with luggage and companions who are mobile but can't walk quickly / rush. Multiple lifts up / down to get to where we needed to be, and there is still a reluctance of some people to share lifts with people they don't know there. The lifts actually still have signs on them saying one person, or a family only! Thankfully most are ignoring that nonsense. If they didn't, people would never get to or from their train!

Delay repay for most people is less preferable to actually getting where they want to be at the time they expected. I was two hours late arriving at Edinburgh last week, so in theory I get my fares back. I fully expect to have to argue the point with TFW, and what should have been an enjoyable journey was one of the worst I've ever experienced.
