Hello,

recently I had the chance to try out a new night train unit CRH2E-24xx from Beijing to Shenzhen.

With a clever staggering concept (known from some plane Business Class cabins), the manufacturer was able to create 60 private sleeping spaces in each car.
One sleeper car has 15 windows. 2 berths are staggered up.
The personal space is much bigger compared to the Nightjet 2 mini cabins.

I've really like this new night train product.

I like the yin-yang approach. And I don't mind the 'semi-private' nature of the seats. Both work well on planes, so there's no reason they shouldn't work on trains.

However, based on that third photo (looking from the head end of the bed) the yin-yang looks a bit greedy in this implementation - with its tiny foot cubby. There also doesn't look like much space for luggage storage - even hand luggage.

It looks like a very efficient use of space but presumably would not be allowed in the UK for the same reason the proposed pods on the Caledonian never appeared. I forget the correct technical term but it's a safety issue that if lying down fore-aft rather than across the carriage and there's a crash, it could do very nasty things to passengers spines.

Nox also plan to have some compartments with longitudinal beds.

Platskartny cars in former Soviet countries also have a mixture of transverse and longitudinal bunks.
