Milton Keynes to Stockport

I'm off to Stockport on Saturday, and looking at ticket prices, it seems that getting a West Midlands Day Ranger might be beneficial to reduce the cost a tad.

At the southern end I can add a day return from MKC to Rugby, and at the northern end a day return from Kidsgrove to Stockport appears to be ideal.

Have I got this right, and are there any cheaper options? I'd prefer to use Avanti services due to the journey time.

When I looked a couple of days ago I wasn't seeing anything better than the Off Peak Return at times that work for me.

So, a Milton Keynes Central to Rugby Off Peak Return is £17.20. The West Midlands Day Ranger is £36.00. And the Kidsgrove to Stockport Off Peak Day Return (route "via Macclesfield") is £15.50. Total = £68.70.

Compared with the through Off Peak Return ticket price of £89.10 (route "via Rugby").

Decent saving. Just need, I think, to avoid the handful of direct Avanti services from Milton Keynes Central to/from Stockport on Saturday that are routed via Crewe and Wilmslow. (Don't think there's that many).

Just the first service; the 0700. On the return, avoid the 0505 (as if!) and the 1855.

First train after the Stockport County vs Luton Town finishes, is at 1724. Not that far from Edgeley Park back to Stockport station.

Well it's either leave early (if you can get let out of the football park) or maybe wait until the 1824. Maybe a twelve minute walk?

Or buy another ticket to head into Manchester to board the 18;15 (?) from there for a better chance of a seat, especially if it's a 9 coach with a 3rd of the train given over to first class/standard premium

I take the casual approach - plenty of time to celebrate a glorious victory (no sorrows to be drowned on this occasion).

As luck would have it, both Avanti services were delayed by 20 minutes or so, which means I will be getting 25% of my fare back (assuming they classify a Day Ranger as a return ticket) by way of Delay Repay which is a nice bonus.

My Delay Repay claims for the above journeys have now been approved, and I am pleasantly surprised that I will be getting a bit more than I expected. It appears that Avanti have calculated the correct amount for my two day return tickets but the WM Day Ranger is treated as a single ticket in each direction, so paying 25% of its value each way.I don't feel the need to argue with them over a trivial amount but it is slightly surprising.

You probablly already know this, but for anyone else reading along, be aware that avanti use two different routes from Stafford to Manchester, some trains run via stoke, others run via crewe.

However as the majority of the Manchester trains which run via Stafford (and Crewe) are first stop Stafford from London it's a bit of a mute point for someone travelling from Milton Keynes (where the majority of the Manchester trains go via Stoke)
