I'm doing this tomorrow, the Avanti routing is Milton Keyns-Stoke-Crewe-Preston-Blackpool, why are they sugesting this? Surely Milton Keynes-Crewe-Preston-Blackpool is far easier?

Since the North Wales calls at MKC were replaced with the Liverpool calls, the connection from the Crewe service to the slower "via Birmingham" service has been rather poorer, so you're far more likely to be sent via Manchester for Preston and points north (which at least southbound is my preference anyway partly because boarding at a terminus is more civlised and partly because of the superior retail offering at Picc). Not quite sure why the wobble without going to Manchester though.

Knowing the Milton Keynes departure time would be useful.
Indeed, it all depends on the departure time.
There's lots of combinations for this route depending on the time of day.

Milton Keynes departure time 17:24, booked through Avanti, I’m going to go on the 17:15 instead and change at Crewe only as it’s same platform and 40 minutes connection, instead of two 10 minute connections
There's your answer then - you can depart later by having additional changes. Journey planners should normally present both options in this scenario.
