I'm trying to find the cheapest way to do this journey within these certain restrictions...

1 person, no railcard. 06/12/13

MKC 0841 through train to BNG. There is a good value advance fare for this journey at £35.50.

BNG to MKC departing after 1500 and arriving before 1900.

Through single fare is £76.60

This totals £112.10 which I'm fairly confident can be beaten.

Tried using trainscanbecheaper but the cheapest routes take too long and are therefore unsuitable.

I have considered the possibility of using a 7 day season to allow splits at stations not stopped at, the fare for Bangor to Llanairfechan is £11.50.

Anyone have any ideas about effective splitting points for this journey?

Either catch the 09:41, or just buy a Hemel - Bangor SVR £82.30

Genius. Thank you for the suggestion.

No offence, but suggesting a return ticket is hardly the work of a genius, although I'll grant that spotting the lack of restrictions from Hemel is clever.

Things appear cleverer then they may actually be if you have put considerable time into something beforehand and not gotten very far!

It does go against logic that further and earlier can be cheaper.

Well, Off-Peak from Milton Keynes to North Wales used to be unrestricted as well until Virgin turned around and changed the code. Guess they must've forgotten about Berkhamsted/Hemel/Apsley cluster

If the OP is willing to sacrifice flexibility in return for a small saving, he/she could buy the aforementioned £35.50 advance single (if still available) from the Virgin website for the outward journey, combined with a £38.80 SVH (VN, does not permit BoJ) at the same time for the return leg, for a total of £74.30.
