I'm up to the end of July, and at that point I was on 7,277 miles in 2015.

I have just over 6 sides of A4 to go through in the moves book, so that number will increase most significantly soon! I need a break though, having been tapping away like crazy for quite a while now. I shall be updating my position in the table first though!

Lots to do today, so the rest will have to wait for now. I might end up tapping away some more later but we'll see. I intend to conclude the adding up by mid- October, hopefully before then.

EDIT: Wow I'm down to 29th place at the moment, best get shifting with some big mileage moves soon...

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to bring this up, but is the Rail Miles Mileage Engine seen as being definitive for distances? I've been looking up a couple of journeys recently and felt the figures didn't look right, which makes me wonder about overall accuracy. Examples are Kings Cross to Edinburgh which I always knew to be 393 miles, which returns 395m 66ch, in spite of taking a short cut on the York avoiding line. Should Rail Miles be relied upon or is there another , more accurate source of this information?

From Rail Miles for Kings Cross to Edinburgh:
Northallerton East Jn, Picton, Yarm, Eaglescliffe, Stockton Cut Jn, Hartburn Jn, Stockton, Norton South Jn., Norton West Jn, Tursdale Jn, Durham, Chester-le-street, Birtley Jn, Low Fell Jn, King Edward Bridge S. Jn, King Edward Bridge N. Jn, Newcastle,

So it seems the extra miles comes from going via Eaglescliffe, Stockton and using that freight only line back to Durham area before continuing northbound.

Well spotted, that is something I had missed. Looking at the section south of York, is a bit being added on by using the freight lines around Doncaster as well? And I've just spotted a deviation just out of Edinburgh, taking the "scenic" route by Millerhill. So the figures might be accurate, but only if the more usual route wasn't taken.

Does anyone have the whole of the NET mileage (including the new stuff)?

Cheers!

If you can get RailMiles to give you the correct routing, including the bits around Donny, then you can get it to give you the correct distance of 393 miles and 13 chains. I can just about, but with a lot of faffing.

When looking for Birmingham New Street to London Euston it has sent me via the Northampton Loop, despite the direct route via Weedon being shorter.

Lies, the direct route via Weedon doesn't exist

Crewe is another station where Rail Miles will tend to send you via the freight avoiders rather than via the station.

In trying different ways of getting the right answer to the London - Edinburgh journey, I also found that the route given varied according to the direction of travel.

It sounds like the public version is still playing up then, I get the following on the subscriber edition for Kings Cross to Edinburgh:

Which looks pretty much spot on to me.

New Street to Euston also works just fine too:

Route: Birmingham New Street to London Euston 112mi 73ch - generated from your selection
Birmingham New Street, Proof House Junction, Grand Junction, Adderley Park, Stechford, Lea Hall, Marston Green, Birmingham International North Junction, Birmingham International, Birmingham International South Junction, Hampton-in-Arden, Berkswell, Tile Hill, Canley, Coventry North Junction, Coventry, Rugby Trent Valley Junction, Rugby North Junction, Rugby, Rugby South Junction, Weedon Wilton Marina, Weedon, Weedon Blisworth Ground Frame, Hanslope Roade, Hanslope Junction, Wolverton, Milton Keynes Central, Denbigh Hall North Junction, Denbigh Hall South Junction, Bletchley, Leighton Buzzard, Ledburn Junction, Cheddington, Tring North Junction, Tring, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead, Hemel Hempstead South Junction, Apsley, Kings Langley, Watford North Junction, Watford Junction, Watford South Junction, Bushey, Harrow & Wealdstone, North Wembley Junction, Wembley Central, Willesden North Junction, Willesden West London Junction, Queens Park (London) (WCML), Kilburn Up & Down Goods Loop, Camden Junction, London Euston

I hope Tom gets the public version working better for you all, I will do the occasional look up for people (47403, I haven't forgotten your list, it will be processed at some point) but I would expect compensating for big lookups ;)

According to Quail, Stillorgan is 8.2km from St Stephens Green, and Balally is 6.4km.

Many thanks for your help.

Doing better than me then, I think I'll be getting close to 10,000 miles by the time I finish going through the rest of August's moves, so long as I hit 12,000 before the end of the year I'll be happy!

I most certainly can look up KGX-YRK for you, which is:

Route: London Kings Cross to York 188mi 40ch - generated from your selection

London Kings Cross, Kings Cross Belle Isle, Finsbury Park, Harringay, Hornsey, Alexandra Palace, New Southgate, Oakleigh Park, New Barnet, Hadley Wood, Potters Bar, Brookmans Park, Welham Green, Hatfield (Herts), Welwyn Garden City, Welwyn North, Woolmer Green Junction, Knebworth, Stevenage, Hitchin, Arlesey, Biggleswade, Sandy, St Neots, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Werrington Junction, Helpston Junction, Tallington Junction, Highdyke Junction, Grantham, Grantham Nottingham Branch Junction, Barkston South Junction, Claypole Loop, Newark North Gate, Retford, Doncaster Loversall Carr Junction, Doncaster, Arksey Loop, Shaftholme Junction, Joan Croft Junction, Temple Hirst Junction, Hambleton South Junction, Hambleton North Junction, Colton Junction, York

I have included the route details the subscriber edition produces, in case it's not correct or just generally needs querying.

And thanks Techniquest. Whilst there are marginal differences in the route I'm getting, I can't see why it gives a distance of 190mi 8ch.

19th place is all I've gone up to, I was hoping to be in the top 15 at least, not far off being out of the top 20!

Minus the mileage gen for the Borders Railway moves, which I'm surprised hardly anyone's asked for yet, then my only missing bits of data are:

Hornbeam Park to Harrogate
Hornbeam Park to Cattal

For some reason RM is not bringing up any data :s

Until the missing bits are done, I'm on 10,369 now for 2015. That's 1,369 ahead of target (average of 1,000 miles per month for the year) so I'm doing OK so far. Hopefully on Monday I'll be off somewhere for the day to get those numbers increased!

RM is bringing up 78 chains for Hornbeam Park to Harrogate & 11 miles 16 chains to Cattal

I'll take those, that'll do nicely. Weird how the subscriber edition doesn't like it!

Cheers for the gen, next time I'm down your way I shall have to get you a bottle of pop in as a thank you :)

Just jumped to 9th with 15176 after adding 2068 in the last week on a trip to Avignon, Arles and Nimes plus Chesterfield for Barrow Hill Gala. Should have been more but Border Reiver Tour was cancelled.

In view of some of the difficulties with the current public version of Railmiles, I have produced some recalibrated milepost data charts, which are mainly based on current service patterns. Some calculations will still be required but as the distances start from, and mainly revolve, around stations rather than junctions, hopefully it is easier to navigate than raw milepost data, for use with regular passenger services. (Obviously not suitable for railtours or those journeys that reverse in the middle of nowhere.)

Please note that this is only a exploratory first step, and there is no firm plan as to when additional areas will be covered. All data are extracted from current Sectional Appendices. If there are useful curves for existing regions that you wish to add, please let me know.

So far I have mainly done lines leaving London going into Kent. You can find the resources here.

And I have the grand total of about 10 bug reports in the mailbox in the last 30 days. Please send in the bug reports, I've just read some of this thread and found that people are reporting them here but not to the email address . They may not get replied to on the email account but they do get acted upon, by louis97.

Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I check this place about once every few months unless I'm pointed to it by people on social media... louis97 posts a lot more but equally doesn't go searching threads for problems. We generally don't find out unless they're reported by email.

I've done my bit. :D The instructions contained at the top of this thread specifically tells people to report to site support at Railmiles, but I guess it is an "old habit die hard" case. I have added an extra sentence to reinforce the idea but not guaranteed to work.

No sweat. This is not going to replace Railmiles, as the ease of use of RM cannot be easily replaced. These charts are meant to be a supplementary tool even when expanded in scope, as it is a more time-consuming exercise.
