Right, if in my job I am booked to travel pass back to Birmingham but don't go on the train / route I am supposed to can I count it. As in effect I am commuting home.
Would be interested in clarification. Cheers

I agree. It should be leisure only IMHO. Even though I have a 42 mile commute most days.

The problem with that is determining at what points leisure becomes commuting and vice versa. Work is work but I have travelled before to commute to be at a location for something work related but at the same time it has been to see people not work related.

I'd say commuting counts going to your workplace but can omit travel to meetings that are now and again...but if work includes travelling everyday then that should be a no-no.
I would say just include leisure mileage for when you are not at work or being paid to work only, to make it even. I don't commute and I didn't include the commute to a meeting I had in the last mileage round as I thought this wasn't supposed to count.

Simple solution. Count your leisure and commuting mileage separately, with two different leagues. We could add a railstaff league and/or a priv league too, although the leisure and commuting lot should be done first.

I almost went out today, after work sent us home early, but I didn't want to put my Mum out and do another 42 mile trip for the sake of it. Tuesday will be my day out, although if I can swing it I'll be out tomorrow. Bring it on I say!

Delightfully simple I'd say. Personally, it's a breeze to separate my leisure and commuting mileage. Why? My commuting is done by road, and I've got 40 miles of that in already, so all my rail travel is leisure. Now, if you were to ask me to split my leisure bus travel for trips to/from a bash from my work mileage, that's a different matter but not overly difficult anyway, as I log what hours I do in my diary, whether it's contracted hours, overtime, gone home early or whatever. Therefore, it's pretty simple to see when I've been on a bash, not least because my spending log in my diary would reveal a purchase of tickets

As for this whole going on a bash after work before going home, and if it counts as leisure or commute mileage, there's a pretty easy answer to that: Leisure. An example that I'm grabbing off the Random Generator:

You commute to work in the morning, then get the gen a required 90's working the Crewe relief. You count the, say, 24 miles in the morning as commuting miles and the, say, 180 miles after work as leisure. Purely because you're going out for fun on the railway, so it's fairly obvious it's leisure miles!

Agree with the difficulty of splitting the two as it can be a very fine dividing line at times; for example where exactly do I start if I go for a bash straight after work? Also what happens if I want to have a spin to scoop a few units in using my work (residential) pass (quite legitimate, though there is zero chance of me doing such a thing )

Well, I've started off 2012 with 24m 74ch on 150144 (a nice surprise!).

Not got many firm plans yet, but going down to London for a meet in a couple of weeks and planning to book a couple of trips with some Christmas money.

Not that I'd ever be in with a chance, but I'll be further hindered this year as it's looking like I'll be living out the country for a few months. The little research I've done shows the railways where I'm going are mostly un-operational. :roll:

At the minute my earliest confirmed travel isn't until the 11th of February, which is ridiculous! I should be going to Cardiff at least once before then, and unless something changes I will be doing the Devon bash on the 29th of January, but otherwise I'm on nothing until the GMPTE Challenge unless I can find some random journeys to make before then...

I nearly got an early boost today in the Severn Beach Line, end to end, which would be 26mi72 - or almost 50mi if from Bath - but my father didn't want to do it in inclement weather

I did get quite a lot at the end of 2011 though, so it's not as though I haven't gone anywhere for ages.

It was indeed just leisure only at one point, I think there must have been a number of people complaining about it though, quite commute mileage has been allowed for longer than I can remember now.

Right, this is something a lot of people seem to have issues with. However to me this seems dreadfully simple. Let's generate an example list of moves to try and illustrate this better. All dates, numbers and whatever randomly generated, although some of the to and from entries could be considered on my wishlist :

319365 Leominster > Hereford (0819, 1d) (arr 0834)
87001 Hereford > Crewe (1734, 8d) (arr 1858)
82003 Crewe > Leominster (1945) (arr 2115)

As much as that would be awesome, it ain't going to happen! So how does this help explain my line of thought? Simple, look at the times. The move on the 319 would be pretty reasonably timed for a commute. The 87 bash to Crewe, which is on a super express to Glasgow calling only at Shrewsbury before Crewe - yes more wishful thinking! - and obviously all this on an knitted-up North and West which will probably never happen, is fairly obviously after work would be over and rather outside the usual commute, in this instance the commute is Leominster to Hereford and return. Anyway, I don't know if this is actually making my point clearer to be honest. To answer the query in the above quote quickly:

If you're off on a bash after work, then it starts from wherever your starting station is after work. If it starts at, say, Blackfriars, then that's the starting point for the bash.

But if it was my job then it wouldn't count......

As an example, in the past I have acted as pilotman for single line working etc. on numerous occasions - in fact I used to do it a lot because the roster clerks knew I didn't mind the job. In that case I would count the mileage to go to work as normal, leave out the mileage accumulated whilst doing the pilot working for the purposes of the competition, then count the mileage going home again.

It is all hypothetical now as there is more chance of me winning the lottery than being asked to act as pilotman these days.......

Time to get off the mark for 2012. Sitting in First all day today taking advantage of EMT money-off offers while it was on a few months ago. I will be on 1B33 from Leicester to St Pancras, 1F35 from St Pancras to Derby, 1P69 Derby to St Pancras and finally 1F76 St Pancras to Leicester today. Come and say hi if anyone's about.

Work. Any driving or route refreshing or travelling pass
Commuting. Any journeys undertaken to get from home to work
Leisure. Anything else
Total. Obviously the above three added together

Well you beat me! My first trip of 2012, a West Midlands Day Ranger, was quite successful for achieving things I've been needing to do for ages. Only one winner, but then I wasn't specifically out for new haulages. I've calculated I'm going to need to do at least another 5 WMDRs this year to achieve one of my goals. To achieve another, I need 350232 to get out and onto a service I'm on, and the other? Well I might need to spend years in the Midlands yet...

No chance of me being in the top 3 I reckon, but I've set as of this morning a very ambitious target of 20,000 miles. A long way to go yet, but shouldn't be too hard with my plans for 2012

As you know I've ramped my target to 30k, even though I failed the 20k target but wasn't hardly far from it!

Yet to sort an ALR out if I can continue with work, and 4 other tours (steam versions) have been added to the 7-8 tours for 2012
