Well, I think I may be done for the year (although there are a couple of possibilities for a train journey before new year)

Assuming not, I finish on 6085 miles for my first year of tallying it - not half bad I don't think
The only thing this excludes are a couple of very short journeys within Brussels as I have no idea where to get the mileages from.

A few quick stats I have worked out:
I have travelled on 25 separate Class 185 units over the year (could be 26 but the first of the year I wrote down as just been a 185/Voyager journey before deciding to be more precise)
I have made 10 journeys on Pendolinos over the course of 2011 and every single one was a different unit!
Having not travelled on a 333 before until this year, I have managed 8 of those units as well and will probably try to locate the others to "clear" the class...hey...why not!

EDIT: Another thought and a pic I have found suggests 12 Pendo journeys on 11 units...did 2 journeys on 390 004 on one day between Crewe and Chester and Llandudno Junction and Crewe respectively...though it was behind a 57 hence why I had missed it and I'm not sure it technically counts :P

Would I be right in thinking those distances are metres?

It is Midi to Central I'm after so it's probably going to be a matter of chains probably...I know it isn't far :P

Yes, they are in metres.

Brussels Midi to Brussels Central = 2.0km (1.24 miles or 1m 19ch)
Brussels Central to Brussels Nord = 1.8km (1.12 miles or 1m 09ch)

I always keep a tally personally, so it's great to see a competition like this on a forum! Unfortunately I won't come anywhere close to winning, but I'm still pretty happy with 27,248 miles so far (I think, roughly) - mostly all commuting from Uxbridge - Euston - Milton Keynes/Northampton, as well as up to Warrington Bank Quay and back once a week.

My tally also includes loads of weekend trips up to Glasgow and back about once a month, and also three sleepers to Inverness (and back three days later).

I have included my LUL mileage from my daily commutes, but I've not recorded any of my other mileage zipping around the underground!

It does help quite a lot when you work for a TOC whose staff travel passes are valid on East Coast at weekends. Needless to say I have clocked up some mega milages on 91s and EC HSTs (and 67s during the Newark diversions) this year.

In that case Sir you have my full respect and you are indeed a 'top man'

On a sort of related point I would like to raise a point regarding what can and can't be counted when totting up your mileage.
To me the allowable mileage should be just leisure travel only and commuting shouldn't really be allowed. You have to commute. I cannot count my work mileage but I have to do that too so whats the difference.
For the record my current totals are

Total including work 65578.25

XC driver, you have a point. From my point of view, yes I have to commute but it is by choice (could drive, indeed have to occasionally) but, once there, I cannot go anywhere - unlike yourself, or any other driver. In fact it could be argued that a "main line" driver has an unfair advantage over one who just shuttles up and down a branch line all day

To put things into perspective my record mileage for a calendar year is roughly 55,000 miles back in the days when there was a lot more of interest (for me) to ride around behind in the UK. This year's total is likely to be just over the 49,000 miles mark of which some 38,500 is leisure travel.

If you really want some mileage, try my mate in Austria who does over 100,000 miles a year (approx 170,000km) hock: Most of this is for leisure, he has a nasty habit of having a spin to places like Salzburg (best part of 200 miles one way) after work!

Not including work travel is fair enough really as otherwise the top of the table is likely to be rail staff (drivers, CSA's, TM's etc) as I can imagine some of you travel hundreds of miles each day potentially :P

Crikey, not bad at all for your record mileage. I still haven't beaten my record of 20,982 in 2007, came close in 2008 with 19,495 and I tried this year but failed miserably. All leisure mileage, with actually a few trips to/from interviews and one trip coming back from Swindon and work once. Closest I've ever come to commuting by rail.

As your mate, that's crazy! I guess he lives on his own?

EDIT: I got back from my two-day bash earlier, and I finish 2011 on 16,553 miles and 39 chains. Less than 447 miles to go to beat my previously revised (pre-Spitfire cancellation) target of 17,000 and I've only got one more day left this month that I'm not working and available for a bash. Sadly, it's not going to happen so I'll settle for what I've got and ensure 2012 kicks off well!

Only on big trip left to come this year & thats a trip to edinburgh on the 27th do 0710 Leeds-Aberdeen which is shown as going via the sub. And of course the mince pie-ex's on boxing day at the Worth Valley.

Another problem with separating commuting from leisure - on several occasions straight after finishing work, I have headed straight for Euston (to do the 90 + 'pretendolino') or Marylebone (for the 67). Would this count as commuting or leisure milage ?

Yeah, kind of what I was getting at though didn't put it quite so well. Work mileage (especially for rail staff) would be quite separate whereas commuting, as you say, isn;t so cut and dry

Confirmation that my 2011 mileage ends on 16,553 miles. No buses running today and funds are limited anyway. Might as well use the limited funds to start 2012 off well next week!

15032 is the total. Mightily pleased. Not bad considering what was said on 3rd January.

My target would be 10k to round off a nice first full season. Nowhere near enough to win the competition tho.

Well I thought my total was final a couple of weeks ago but managed to get 20 miles today behind 47701 on the Dartmoor Railway with some mince pies. So my finished total for 2011 is 31479. Very pleased with that in my first full year! Should start 2012 flying with plenty of days off from work after working way too much over Christmas. Oh the joys of retail. But i am not setting a target for 2012. Will just see what happens.
