The reason people's mileages are precise is because they record them accurately, rather than just estimating X-Y is 'about 100 miles'.

Not that I am overly suspicious of anyone for the reason of there not being any obvious motive to winning; I have to say I'd be more suspect of someone with very rounded figures due to the fact that that they are simply less likely (not impossible - my weekly shopping bill a few weeks ago came to exactly £19).

I generally tend to round mine to the nearest mile, mostly down though, so my actual distance is probably a few miles more.

I meant as in figures like 20,000 miles rather than something like 20,127 miles. I round the chains down below 70 and everything above that up. I didn't really record anything between Sept and the end of the year, except a few long distance journeys roughly equalling 1,000 miles which I could remember off the top of my head just now.

I record mine in miles, converting the chains to points of a mile then round up or down accordingly for here.

I record my moves in a) a journey by journey table, detailing class travelled, TOPS, Headcode, service destination and origin, my destination and origin, the delay encountered on my journey (positive or negative) and then the mileage; b) a TOPS table detailing total mileage and journeys had behind each unit/locomotive/class; c) a Class table indicating briefly which members of each class I've had. I log by 'bashing', I don't log by sight.

My table a) entry typically would be thus;

31/12/2010- - 350120 - NMP - HML - 1650 - EUS - EUS - 1720 - -1 - 2K35 - 24.49

One final Cheshire day ranger for me today has taken my final mileage for the year to 12,369m 75ch. That's just for main line trains, I don't record preserved line or light rail mileage.

I'm deffo up for next year, three tours booked already! My guess at 20,000 miles this year is random, please discard it as necessarty, but I'm starting early next year: Cherry Tree-Littleborough via Hebden Bridge and return is up tomorrow!

1) Includes both Ireland and England
2) Only includes loco hauled mileage.

Well, only just went over 19k after EC failed to get me between London and Leeds at the end of last year. Should be higher this year as I'll be counting my Underground miles too.
