It looks like you're a special case being self-employed. If you had an employer paying for your travel it would'nt count. I don't think most people would count travelling to various clients as 'commuting'
I include my commuting but i've travelled for example for a course where my employer paid for my travel. I've not included that as travel as part of my job. Most companies will not pay for commuting as it gets complicated as the inland revenue want tax paying on it whereas they don't for travel as part of the job.

--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Sorry can't edit as on a phone. Another way of looking at it-I saw countable miles as being within your control-you decide where to live to commute from and when to have pleasure trips and ones you can't control because you have to go somewhere for your job don't count-it the same way most car insurance differentiates between use for a regular commute and use for business trips.

I'm trying to find the logic in all of that.

Anyway, I decide where I live. I could be living in Timbuktu for all my clients care. I have work to do and get paid a fee, and I sort out when and how I travel.

In any case, what would the difference be if I had a client in London or I had an employer in London, and in both cases I had to travel a number of times a week?

Answer: zilch. In one case, an employer pays me a salary and I pay my commuting cost out of that; in the other case, a client pays me a fee and I pay my commuting cost out of that. You're saying the first should be allowed but the second not?

On a train...somewhere!
Have been on the train to college a couple of times and squeezed in a trip to London.

The total now rests at 9024m 45ch. I have cleared my target :D

23rd place...

I did nearly 1,350 miles last week, almost all of it on business and at my employer's expense. I'm definitely going to count it because I devised a quality scheme and it was a particularly unusual thing for someone in my line of work to do: almost everyone else uses the car for eveything. Besides, I need the miles this year!

Shipley > Leeds 10.75 miles 91110
Leeds > Haymarket 231.75 miles EC HST
Inverkeithing > Fife circle > Inverkeithing 40.25 miles 67021 at my own cost
Inverkeithing > Perth 43.75 miles 158
Perth > Inverness 118 miles Highland Chieftain at my own cost
Inverness > Euston 588 miles 67009/90036 on the sleeper
St Pancras > Strood 32 miles 395
Strood > Dartford 14 miles 465
Dartford > Waterloo East (via Sidcup) 16.5 miles 376
Waterloo > Weybridge 19 miles 450
Byfleet & New Haw > Vauxhall 19.25 miles 455
Vauxhall > Kings Cross 4 miles 1967 stock
Kings Cross > Leeds 185.75 miles HST
Leeds > Saltaire 11.5 miles 333

Phew! Can anyone beat that in 4 days? Not just in terms of distance, but interest as well?

Now at 6,209.5 miles for the year, of which 2,508.25 is loco-hauled, 1,187.75 on HSTs, 293.5 on NIR thumpers :), 161.25 behind steam, and 159.75 on pacers! Should make 8,000 easily enough 'cos I've got the Spitfire tour on 20th November, plus another trip to Perth which will add significantly to the HST mileage.

The most I did in one "day" this year was 1432 miles:

Rome - Munich (sleeper)
Munich - Frankfurt
Frankfurt - Brussels
Brussels - London
London - Birmingham

I'm cheating a little here because the "day" refers to one day of my Inter-Rail pass. If you travel on a night train which leaves after 19:00 you only have to use the following day of your pass. Luckily, the Rome - Munich sleeper leaves at 19:05. :p

Cost of this (all in 1st apart from Eurostar) was:
Imputed cost of one day Inter-Rail: €53
Sleeper supplement (single with private shower - very nice): €100
Eurostar: €50
Total: €203, so about £175. Journey time: about 26½ hours.

The most I've ever done in one day was the 13th August 2010 where I did 666m 42ch.

It involved a hell of a lot of light rail and two Eurostar trips (Our & Return)

Thanks to the DB German Reunification €20 single anywhere in germany offer, I managed to add nearly 1000m yesterday with a day trip from Munich to Hamburg for only €40

Just broke the 5000 mile mark, all at leisure, no travelling to work etc. Pretty happy with that. I had no idea what kind of mileage I would do, but got a run to London and back and a couple of runs on the Caledonian Sleeper before the year is out, would be nice to reach 7500.

What is this aversion to business travel and commuting? Has this been devised by someone who (a) does no business travel, and (b) does not commute by rail, and is a teeny weeny bit jealous of those who can do either or both of these?

Next year for me is going to see an extravaganza of well thought out and creative railway travel on the firm after I've opted out of the company car scheme. And every inch of it will count towards the year's total!

I've already got myself tickets booked to kick off 2011's epic plans, some serious mileage involved too (1,300 or so), so bring on next year's competition! Expect some tough competition 4SRKT! <D

Commuting is allowed! Quote from post 1:

Mileage for leisure or commuting purposes only.

What isn't allowed is work mileage, eg being paid as a guard and counting all your journey whilst working.

Ah! I get it. I can see why that might not count. Cheers.

8572 is my total after the last few weeks, missed an opportunity for more on the last 67 Paignton Loco Hauled Today but feeling a little bit more confident about reaching my target now :D

Down to earth with a bump.

After what will certainly be a personal record for me in 2010 (although the first time I counted it!), my mileage in 2011 may well tend towards zero.

Updated mine after last Saturday's Red Dot Day.

I've done several hundred miles on the Tube since mid-Sept but haven't been calculating them so just left them off. I wouldn't have won anyway so not too worried about it, but will keep better track of them from now on.

I'm 61st. Was 50th at one point. Can't see myself gaining enough to even go up 1 rank on there either.

Done significantly less than I did last year, when I wasnt counting it.

Next year I will probably do more again.

looking at forthcoming travel plans, I don't think I'll get much above 22,000 this year, and that doesn't include any commuting as I walk to work.

Hopefully next year I'll be able to get a free one day all of germany pass and clock up a lot of mileage that way (it's actually valid for 34 hours).

Having had so many setbacks of late, I've had almost no chances to travel. In fact, I've only just gotten round to calculating my new total...

...and I'm still short of 10,000. Come tomorrow though, that annoying fact will be wiped - by a decent margin. 500+ this weekend (about time) :D

I've got to catch up to Techniquest before the year is out <D

That won't be too hard ol' chap, I've got absolutely bugger all planned for the final two months of the year. Planning on going out tomorrow, but where to is currently a mystery.

Only planned trip for the moment is at the end of November/1st December, when I have to go to the dentist. Sadly this time of year is always the worst for cranking, as birthdays and Christmas take up so much money it's unreal.

I've jumped from 12th to 10th with my latest update but expect to slip as my mileage in November and December will be lower than usual due to a couple of commutes I won't be making and a couple of coach trips due to having left booking train tickets a bit late and my allergy to paying 4x what I normally do for trips.

I'm looking dodgy now for my target of 8,000. By the end of this week I'll just have crept past 7,000, and I'm planning a trip to Cardiff on the WAG train later this month. However I was relying on getting 270+ miles (including positioning move) on Spitfire's class 37 mini-tour to the Blyth & Tyne on 20th November, and now that's been cancelled <(

I've only done 3200.5 this year - don't get out much, most of that was done in one week.
Back in the late 80s/early 90s I was doing ten times that easily.

Gah! Down to a series of cock ups I'm not even past 7,000 yet, and frankly I won't get far past this all year. Following the cancellation of the Spitfire do I've also had to postpone a planned trip to Cardiff on the 57 and doing the bubble car until the new year. This would have got me just over 500 miles which would have been most welcome. I'm now desparately hoping for the Valenta Farewell do to come off to get a chance to get 7,500. 8,000 simply won't happen :(

Am opting out of the company car scheme at the end of December, so will be able to justify more work-related rail journeys next year. Accordingly I'm increasing my next year's target to 10,000.

<gulp>

I am hoping to get a new girlfriend in Düsseldorf and have to travel there every weekend, that'll rack up the miles ;)

Have you chosen the location of the girlfriend in order to get the miles in?

My best mileage year ever was when I had a girlfriend who lived in Dublin while I was living in Belfast. I worked in Larne and commuted by train every day. I got just shy of 50 thumper miles per day, and went to Dublin at the weekends, and 227 GM miles every weekend (plus odd bits of DART mileage). 500 mile weeks were not uncommon, almost all of it on rateable traction :)

Still, I married her, so from her being the reason that I got so many miles in 1993, she's gone to being the main reason I get so few miles these days!
