6148 miles after my second London trip of the year, all my miles are Genuine, no point cheating really is there, I do not have an excel spreadsheet as i only calculated my journeys and never jotted them down on excel, I will look into it in next years competition however. I'm aiming for 10,000 on this my first year of calculating mileage, and with 2 more London trips on the Cards, plus York and a FOSS the only planned things I have, I feel pretty confident

Made a couple of short trips this month so far, have updated my total but nothing super worth mentioning. Highlight of the recent moves was having 150125 on the Western Region on Friday night

Anyway, having been very annoyed by being stuck on 8,998mi after leaving Bath on Friday, I have now cleared that barrier, with a total of 9,166.

According to the table, Techniquest has 9,067. Back in front

It's an unfair advantage. You just turn up, say "sure, I'll help", and Bob's your uncle. Okay, it's not quite that simple, but it's both easy and free! Anyone who lived in, say, Alton could cover hundreds of miles a day at zero cost!

They could do that anyway if they bought an Inter-Rail pass - and much easier as they wouldn't have to do any work!

At a cost of about £1/week. And as a volunteer, you have to pay with your time - you don't just turn up and ride about. If cost comes 9into it, would you say priv holders shouldn't count things while travelling on a box?

Assuming they havn't extended since August 2003, the distance is 76 chains between Tunstall Road and Park Halt (source - Preserved Railways Miles & Chains by S. Clarke).

There is a note in that publication about future plans to extend 3/4 mile into the park itself, but I am not sure if that has actually happened yet (or not!).

Regarding my answer to the poll, it is no. Not much different to those who work on the "big railway" on the actual trains, they have an inbuilt advantage to those of us who work on the platform, P. Way, in the booking office, signal box, control office etc.

The question of counting priv (or not) is a thorny one, what happens if you have a priv season ticket for which you pay for the amount over the "free mileage" allowance - or if you choose to purchase a priv ticket rather than use a box? Bearing in mind that a priv is 1/4 of the normal public fare and can be more expensive than buying an advance ticket.

Whilst I am quite willing to split my mileage up into commuting and leisure, there is no way I am going to try and separate what has been paid for and what was "free" *. In any case, the paid for stuff includes a lot of tours and nearly all foreign travel this year so far - only used an FIP pass for about one day in Portugal.

Actually I have to be honest with you; the next three weeks are pretty much dead for me. I'll get Southend-London and London-Oxford/Northampton on about the 27th, and then Nottingham-Southend and Southend-Bath in early September (and then the Oxford/Northampton and Nottingham journeys are uncertain), and that's about it. So by the time I come back to the Western you'll probably be ahead. I'll have to make it up when I return!

By the way, how frequently are we posting in this thread, as opposed to everyone else?

Yeah, I started noticing that after my last post on this thread. If I posted every update to my mileage after a bash, as I do on another forum, then this would be a huge thread!

Looks like it's not quite as dead as I thought. I have to return to Bath earlier than expected, so I'm off on a 300+ journey on Friday/Monday: Thorpe Bay to Bath Spa via Salisbury and back [split in London and priced to Shirehampton of course ]. I might yet manage 10,000 before my holiday.

I see you'll be coming through my local shack again then when you return from Southend. Not that I'll be able to pop down to say hello or owt mind, as on Friday I'm spending the entire day doing bugger all, preferably getting a lot of sleep in before the overnighter in London. Monday's already fully allocated to a serious amount of agency stuff too.

Following my return from Hereford yesterday, going via Birmingham due to randomly bumping into a couple of fellow HST bashers at Hereford (went to Brum for 90024 but it failed. Thank fook it was dud after all for me!), my mileage has been increased to 9,363 miles and 1 chain

The war between Ivo and myself for 2010 mileage continues, as I see he's still ahead of me! That much confirms overnight moves with Southern and FCC on Saturday morning vice night buses then!

Updated my mileage after a rather big bash on Friday and Saturday this week. Just 51 miles and 5 chains to go until I hit my target of 10,000 miles this year!

A mammoth total of 9,948 miles and 75 chains for 2010 so far. Not got any big bashes coming up in the next few weeks, little bits here and there in the meantime although I might be off to Weymouth in a couple of weeks time.
