Oh excellent! So my 160 for the day has already lifted me! I'm no longer having to wait until it would have made no difference... But, I have an 830 chasm ahead! How am I supposed to make that up? Still, I suppose that 7th in the first year and after 20% of the competition isn't bad. Even if I do have barely half of 1st :roll:

Just in case anyone didn't already know, the Mileage Calculator mentioned in the first post does also include Tube and DLR mileage. For tube, put in, for example, "Old Street LUL" or "Charing Cross (Bakerloo)" and for DLR put in, for example, "Canary Wharf (DLR)".

Ah - I've not included any of my tube mileage - my common journey that I tried from KXStP - Baker Street doesn't seemn to be in.

Will have a look at some others tonight.

That one is a right pain. You need King's Cross St Pancras (SSL LUL) to Baker Street LUL, a distance of 1mi 39ch. KGX is a nightmare with this, because there is the ECML station, King's Cross Thameslink (which is obviously closed now), four LUL ones and a whole series of sidings etc!

I've just noticed that due to points accumulated on my bahncard, I am entitled to a one day travelcard which is valid on all DB trains in germany from midnight to 10am on the second day. Just think of the possibilities for racking up the mileage:

Munich-Dortmund
Dortmund-Hamburg
Hamburg-Berlin
Berlin-Leipzig
Leipzig-Frankfurt
Frankfurt-Berlin via Hanover
Berlin-Munich

probably won't happen though. I think the most I'll do is return Munich-Hanover

Trip on Monday Birmingham to York, plus day 1 of an East Midlands Rover yesterday has given me almost 500 Miles this week. Hopefully should have done 1,000 Miles by Sunday evening pushing me up over 3,000.

Out of interest how do you do your German distances? Is there anything better or easier than the Eisenbahn Deutschland atlas? Or do I have to pester our friend from Stevenage to do a book!

I normally use a set of distances from personal observation that I knocked up on speadsheets before Eisenbahnatlas became available. They have not been updated properly for some time and there are quite a few "grey areas" so I normally use the atlas to double check.

There is a downloadable mileage / price calculator on the DB website but it is rather fiddly to use - will post the link later when I can find it!

EDIT:
It is called TPS-Preisauskunft-Software 2010, and can be found HERE . You need to download the 11.41MB zip file towards the bottom of the page.

When you get it open, you need to click on "Preisaufkunft" in the top left hand corner and enter the start and end points, if doing a long route it is probably best to do in in chunks to make sure that the routeing is correct. The fiddly bit comes in that you need to enter the staions as their official codes as seen in the "Auswahl 2" box on the right, it is easier to look them up in the index to Eisenbahnatlas Deutschland rather than attempt to find them in the list! (There might well be a search function but I can't see one!)

Have entered my mileage and it seems I am in third place (almost in second!!). I added my original total and then had to amend it to include a business trip between London Euston and Glasgow Central!

4500 for me now, lost over 100 last week on bloody rail replacement buses, when they turned up!
whoever thought that a 4 coach train load of passengers would get on 1 49 seater coach

Get another 200 tomorrow as well depending which wat I go.

nearly up to 6000 with my round trip from Munich to Prague. Not sure it was worth it though, the Alex (arriva) trains are bloody uncomfortable. However, the Czech trains I saw looked even worse, ancient & filthy, excepting the Prague S-Bahn double deckers and the Pendolino.

Prague was nice though.

That's probably it from me until the end of April (I need a rest) when I will be doing Munich-Leeds via Paris & London for the first time (and returning from Grantham).

Just cracked the 5,000 barrier after travelling on The Cumbrian Crusader II, though took a bit longer to calculate some of the mileages after the off route diversions we took.

Depressing how spring seems to be bringing everyone out...dropping down the table fast - and I don't think getting round to calculating my underground trips is going to make *that* big a difference.

Yes, I've noticed that. Not amused at all. At least after Brum tomorrow I will have cleared 5,000 myself (something like 5,300 I believe), and then there's that Heart of Wessex idea of yours. I also have another idea, but that involves buying a weekly ticket for use on the Severn Beach Line (£6 with a Railcard!)...

Pacers. For one whole week. Where's my sick bucket...?

You can't get Railcard discounts on a Season ticket; so you'd pay £9 for a weekly all the way to the Beach or £6 to Clifton (I guess you'd want to get off at Redland for the train back).

Anyway, if you've got some money I'd have thought you'd be better off with a Freedom of Severn & Solent Rover. With Railcard £26.50 for 3 in 7 or £40.00 for 8 in 15. You can get some quite good runs in (eg. Swindon - Cardiff C, 61 miles; Great Malvern - Weymouth, 161 miles; Cardiff C - Portsmouth H, 131 miles).
