mile marker

On the Tyne & Wear Metro, I noticed between East Boldon and Brockley Whins, this modern distance marker right next to an original 1/4 mile marker. Question is, does the 93 indicate the distance in miles or kilometers from the nearest main rail center ?, & if so, where?, or to a specific point on the Metro system only. This area is owned & used by Network Rail, I believe.

The modern milepost appears (I can’t enlarge the photo) to be 93 1/2 as it appears to have the the II below the 93 that usually indicated ‘and a half’. The old mile post also looks like 1/2 and I think the old NER and LNER practice was to only give the full miles at the mile and the three intermediate posts just had 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4.

I reckon, according to the 2006 Quail volume, that 93 1/2 was between East Boldon CCTV crossing and Tile Shed AHB, a section with an Up Loop in addition to the Up and Down lines. The distance was measured from Wortley Junction at Leeds via Harrogate (Starbeck) and Northallerton Low Level.

And, of course, via Sunderland. Think I'm right in saying that the Tyne and Wear Metro (where standalone) is measured in metric.

Indeed: Ripon, Yarm, Eaglescliffe, Hartlepool and Sunderland.

The zero point is not the current Wortley Junction, but the point where the former North Eastern line from Harrogate became the North Eastern and London & North Western Joint line at Leeds. This Wortley Junction was on the northernmost pair of tracks about a quarter-mile east of the current Armley Junction.

Thanks for the replies gents interesting about the distance being to Wortley Jnc, refering to the old NER. The location is spot on, just east of the Tilesheds crossing
