The crowded tram was travelling in the centre of Milan at rush hour when it appeared to crash into the side of a building.

The crowded tram was travelling on the line 9 route along Milan's Viale Vittorio Veneto at about 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) when it left the track and crashed into a building.

Usually the tram is able to transmit a request to an antenna in the track on the approach to the points. The tram will generally request a particular setting according to the route it is following, but the driver can override this and select left or right from a keypad. There may also be overrides from the tram control centre.
