I think considering how widespread and heavy the snow has been/is it may be pertinent to have a thread to group stories relating to this in regional threads.

I'm down to work just 15:30-19:08 but trains from Redditch looked to be going bad, so I'm travelling in on an arrival to New St due 14:03 and have said to the XC traincrew controller to use me early if neceassary, and that I'm willing to stay until 23:15 (last train home). Any updates I'll add later, just trying to do my bit and hoping I don't get moaned at by some ungrateful person(s).

I just wetting myself laughing at the latest Met Office fail. Birmingham was supposed to miss the snow today; instead I've just been shovelling 3 inches of the stuff off mine and an elderly neighbour's drive! Oh well!

...Met office failure please. This is not the United States of shorthand speak.

Yeah it is pretty bad here. Most of the buses are off, or certainly in south Birmingham anyway, which is not something I've seen before. Even when we had it really bad in previous years, they've just pulled routes from quiet side roads and diverted them down main roads instead. To be honest, it looks like the council haven't been out/haven't been out enough - even main road buses have been pulled.

No, it isn't. But, it's all about mindset - you either give up or do what you can. If I'd have been rostered to work today, I guarantee I'd have been there rather than just give up and not bother. But, as for the Met Office, they have got to the point where they may as well not bother - they never get it right.

shall we ask em to take a month off and see how we do then? sunny morning, go to seaside starts raining in afternoon "well if only there had been a forcast"

yes they get it wrong because its nature and it has little warning signs of change. When they do get it right no one says anything.... they never claim to be 100% accurate and they arnt. its hardly all the time they get it wrong.

but i agree that it is a mindset, 90% of the time the people who are good workers and want to work will get to work one way or another the ones that dont get in, cant be bothered and usually represents work ethic....
works that way in every job

90% is in bold as i am aware sometimes it doesnt work like that

I got in to New Street 1hr15 early as it transpired, and had to sit around for my first bit. The 15:49 New Street-Nottingham, it was running 3 late at Ashchurch (from Cardiff) and then 8 late off University. The cross-city was not running well at this point and the unit didn't arrive at New St until 16:15 rather than 15:45. Then came the bad news we didn't have a driver. Couple that with the fact we only had a 2-car and it was quite hectic. I kept people informed as mush as possible, but there was little information to give them, just waiting. We finally got a driver and departed New St 95 late @17:24 and the train spun at Derby to claw back time.

Just rang the Traincrew Controllers as I approach Tamworth and they've cancelled a 19:52 New Street-Leicester and return, in at 22:14. By rights I could leave when we reach New St, but I told them I'd take this round trip as I can still (hopefully) get a train back to Redditch.

Watch this space for more fun

P.S. I only had one person be rude or abusive to me at New Street, no need and most other passengers had a go at him rather than join in.
--------------------
Update 2 :
With the shortages of crew, and a late runner in from Cambridge requiring a guards PNB, it has been decided better to utilise me on the 20:22 New St-Cambridge as far as Leicester. We've been given a stop order for all the loaal shacks and the 19:52 is now cancelled.

Cue a woman shouting in my face 'Why are Cambridge customers more important than Leicester customers?'

I answered 'We only have a short supply of trains, drivers and guards. Both the 19:52 and 20:22 need running, but we only have enough resources for one service. It has been deemed moore beneficial to use the crew on the 20:22 as we can get more people home to their destinations, albeit delayed.'

She continued 'But we're now going to be half an hour late getting back, how is that beneficial?'

Me 'In order to get you back on time, we would have to cancel the train for passengers travelling between Leicester and Cambridge. This is their last train of the day. It's very selfish to want so many individuals to be stranded at New Street just so you aren't half an hour late.'

Her 'What's selfish is forcing people to stand in a packed train because you can't run a service properly.'

Me 'and here am I just trying to help out. I could have easily gone home 1 hour ago when my job finished. Instead, I volunteered to help out with the huge volume of extra people caused by the Christmas run-in, and the heavy snow. And this is how my kindness is treated. I could be at home now, warm and cosy with my wife who was due to give birth 6 days ago!'

And she still couldn't bring herself to apologise. Thankfully, again, other passengers told her to shut up and move along.

i hate people like that, i get them too (not the same at all really as i work in hospitality part time while at uni but we still get customers similar to that)

todays example

asking round who ordered turkey? woman goes me, put it down. end of that...

10 minutes later shes up in arms because shes a veggie and shes got turkey
youd think if your a veggie when i ask did you order turkey, theyd go no im a vegetarian and id go get a vegetarian meal.

well done to you :)

train spun at Derby to claw back time.

Could you explain what this means please i'm far too curious for my own good ;)

I was stranded aboard the 15:56 London Euston to Birmingham New Street LM service yesterday. Utter chaos. The train arrived at Euston 15minutes late from it's previous destination and was left in a pretty dire state. One toilet was working and it was utterly vile! So we got going at about 16:15, and the guard starts announcing that if you want the Birmingham train to go towards the rear 4 carriages which was rammed as usual, whilst I was sat in the Crewe section with a table to myself! Why doesn't the guard advertise this plentiful carriage and say that they need to move down at Northampton? So we pass Bletchley and after a few couple of minute stops we stop a few minutes away from MK. The guard said a few times we were going to be delayed, and we ended up being so for 40minutes. With very few announcements. I went to find the guard and found him in one of the conjoined 350s cabs with the lights off, I tapped on the glass and I think I woke him up! He was fairly clueless so I went and sat back down. 5 minutes later the automated woman says "Will the guard please contact the driver", which to me meant something was wrong and the driver didn't know the guard was in that cab! If I were him I would have sat in the goldfish bowl with the door open incase anyone needed me. So we got going again, got a quick apology and trundled into Northampton about an hour late, where we were told we were waiting on the Crew. This took another 30 or so minutes by which time my phone had died and then we were told to move trains! On this second 350 which had it's London facing cab was covered in snow we waited on for another ten minutes, when we departed Northampton we actually cheered! So off we went without problems until we pitched up at Canley, I got up to go off, pressed the button and the door opened about an inch or two, I tried pushing it open with a fair amount of force, gave up and tried to push it closed so the train would be able to leave without further delay to everyone else! It wouldn't close either so I ended up pulling the passenger alarm to alert the driver that the door was jammed open as the guard wasn't any where in sight! I have to say i'm glad my life wasn't in danger, those alarms are awful, I couldn't understand a word the driver said. By now the guard had turned up so I just walked up to another door and left.

Fairly eventful journey if you ask me.

I'm guessing it means the outbound journey was terminated short of destination at Derby, and the return journey was started from Derby rather than the intended origin.

Yep, instead of still going New St-Nottingham then Nottingham-New St we went New St-Derby and Derby-New St. It meant the unit could get back to being close on to it's diagram by the time we returned to New St.

Ok now I understand. The phrasing sounded like you'd run the train around a loop which left me wondering what that would solve.
