The Midland Railway Centre at Ripley, Derbyshire has been a railway on my 'to visit' list for a couple of years now, so on Saturday morning, I decided I'd pay it a visit.

The highlight was the Llangollen Class 108, it's nice to see a 1st generation DMU in a livery that isn't green!

I have mixed feelings about the line it's self, the station buildings at Swanwick and Butterley are lovely, Butterley station building is a traditional Midland Railway building with an open fire in the ticket office. However, upon leaving Butterley, it becomes clear that funds and resources are limited, with much of the line resembling a scrap yard, I do think a clear out of stock with no prospect of restoration is needed, this would go a long way to improving the lines image.

I agree whole-heartedly on BR blue and grey DMUs. It is these that us 50-somethings grew up with and were a big part of our lives.

I have no emotional connection with the green and IMHO, it does nothing to highlight the features or uniqueness of a DMU, unlike the yellow ends. I accept that others might disagree but they are wrong.

I think the fascination with painting everything into green comes from a desire to understandably, put the unit back into it's 'as built' condition.
