New CAF Urbos 3 Trams are 32.966m long - nearly 9m longer!

Platform lengths are fine for the new trams.

Once the trams are extended further into Birmingham city Centre I can see the service becoming even more popular with further increases in passenger us if the extensions to Wolverhampton railway station is given the go ahead along with the proposed extension to Birmingham International Airport

It just seems so very slow to me, perhaps too many stops close together. It's fine when it gets going, but it doesn't match the European systems.

Why are the trams so incredibly slow entering and leaving the Wolverhampton terminus, it's only a set of points ! Ridiculous that you can walk quicker.

They will be popular with people with passes doing short hop journeys along the city centre extensions, but unlikely to attract many more cash fare passengers on those short distances, or people travelling the full length of the route. Extending to Birmingham Airport is only going to be popular if it takes a significantly different route to existing rail and to some extent bus services.

The reason the trams are so slow over the points at Wolverhamton St Georges currently is the placement of a speed restriction of just 5kph due to excessive point blade wear... The obvious risk with such a low rail profile height is that a tram could easily derail over the worn blades at too high a speed. The entire trackwork is due for renewal though - no date fixed yet.

We now have 5 of the new fleet after Tram 21 arrived on Monday 10th early in the morning....

I'm happy to say that today I had my first drive in one of the new fleet after a patient wait for some of us to be able to actually move one within the depot!

There is an awful lot going on with the testing process which has meant I have been rather quiet on here of late. Deliveries had been subject to weather delays but fingers crossed that the schedule keeps to plan from now on.

The new trams WILL appear on the mainline in daylight soon, but a lot of driver training and ghost running will have to take place before any actual service running, so please be patient - the wait will be worth it

I look forward to seeing these new trams in service, particularly when the extension to New St. opens - I will say I'm not too fond of the pink colour scheme.

The preparation works outside New Street for the trams are coming along, its a bit weird for me to say I'll be jumping on a tram at New Street in a years time.

New tram on show

One of the new Urbos 3 trams will be at Snow Hill Metro stop on Saturday 5th April from 10:00 - 15:00. Please come along and have a look around the new tram.

The new tram will be making an appearance in Wolverhampton soon. Keep an eye out for that date.

Expert advice about the Midland Metro project is available from the Metro Information Vehicle which will be on Corporation Street, opposite House of Fraser, on Wednesday 2nd ,16th and 30th April from 11:30 until 14:00.

Im assuming it's running down line by its-self or with an older tram so may be photo or video chance.

Interesting solution to the cleaning under seats issue, having most of them with no space underneath (presumably expanded axles boxes). Does reduce space available for bags though.

To be honest I have no idea what's under those boxed in areas but I'm sure I will find out eventually....

As for the bags issue - even with space under the current fleet seats, many passengers insist on either having them on adjacent seats or their laps; or blocking up the aisles which isn't really allowed but often we can't insist on their removal with overcrowding issues we already experience.

Looking closely at the photos, some of the seats do have space underneath them. It's a bit hard to tell from these pictures but I would hazard a guess that the ones that don't are where the wheels stick up above floor level, as always happens with low floor trams.

Metro Tram update

Tram 16 is in service , the only trams not working are 01-02-03-04-14

Tram 03 was taken out of service around 28-12-13 and tram 04 out around 28-01-14

Tram 03 has not worked since then ,but Tram 04 has only worked one return service per day mon/fri Wednsebury grt western st to snowhill & return also the same return service on football days .

Tram 14 was taken out around 28-04-14 and has since not gone back on the rails yet ,it has however recently received parts from Tram 03 see photo.

Over the last few weeks Tram 04 has been in the shops for repair and is now ready to hit the main line again ready for a full days work.

Several trams have had new new tyres fitted. 06-07-08-09 to name a few

And the newest tram ( 23 ) arrived on 13-05-14

metro at the moment have 11 ,T69 trams available for service and on most days ALL will be working.
