Remember it was suppose to be replaced by the apt in the 70's

APT was supposed to arrive in the late 80s perhaps into the early 90s, the APT-E only finished testing in 1976 so to produce the APT-S when the APT-P wasn't ready until 1981 (and even then it wasn't really ready until 1984) would have been impossible. I don't see how BR could have run the APT programme any faster than it did, remember APT was at the cutting edge of technology at the time and those sorts of complex projects take a lot of testing, development and most of all time.

"Such a plan could also become caught up in proposals to electrify the railway through Sheffield and delayed while that project awaits approval, she added."

Hidden away in an article from the sheffield star as an article about the new footbridge. Maybe its more on the cards than we ever believed?

This probably means the footbridge is going to be delayed indefinitely,.

Would such a project be commenced immediately upon the HOWT being finished with the GWML project or would they be purchasing a second train? (As I understood it the original order was for two trains but the second was scrapped?)

MML electrification is a major plank of the CP5 enhancement proposals, it's in NR's online information available since last September. July this year is when the Government has to produce the CP5 HLOS, and NR will firm up the enhancements plan.

It hasn't really been hidden away at all...

A date that has been bandied around however was that if work started in late CP5 it would be finished around 2024.

They never went as far as an order for two trains, from what I can find out online. By late 2010 all references were to 'the' high output plant system, and IIRC that's what the ITT was for when eventually published.

However, the 23 vehicle train is capable of operating in two or possible more parts, because the piling train at least is designed to move ahead of the rest of the modules once at the work site.
