It makes you wonder what they could have made of Stockton station if they hadn't comprehensively trashed it in the 70's and 80's ?

Too true, that photo you put on here of it weeks before it was torn to the ground shows this.
This goes to show what a little TLC can do to stations. I hate to bring up this again, but if people were to put this much effort into Wakefield Kirkgate etc, more people would be attracted to railways.
It is a nice station (Middlesbrough), and another success story is Thornaby, just a stone’s throw away from there, kind of a Stockton that turned out alright.

The story of Thornaby's 80’s demise and 00's revival is here:

It's a shame that Stockton hasn't followed suit. Aside from Stockton, Thornaby and Sunderland, are there anymore North East stations (or indeed anywhere) that have suffered a similar fate, and never recovered?

Billingham!
Seaton Carew is looking pretty smart now too.
Eaglescliffe is a bit on the iffy side, but still better than Billingham!

Eaglescliffe was looked at for staffing on a similar level to Chester-le-Street (i.e. by an agency, not by a TOC), but I don't think anything came of it.

I have got to be honest; Billingham doesn't look that bad... or is it just me?

Well the gist of the award for Middlesbrough is it's well kept architecture. Although Thornaby has experienced something of a passenger revival in recent years that is largely due to the fact that Stockton itself has virtually no train service worth speaking of.I don't think it's architecture would win any prizes!
And of course anybody from Stockton or Middlesbrough wishing to travel to London has 3 choices; NR to Darlington for EC, NR to Eaglescliffe for GCT or TPE to York for EC.
Imagine a situation where Stockton hadn't been wrecked. You had GCT and NR services stopping there and maybe the former service between Hartlepool and Darlington was still running...THAT would be impressive.
Somebody asked which other stations had been ruined - Northallerton and Thirsk spring to mind and of course Saltburn and Redcar. Their "remains" are tidily kept but that's all they are as anyone who has frozen on the platform at Northallerton in winter will know.
P.S I am sure BR thought about demolishing the roof of Darlington once, can anyone confirm this?

Believe me Billingham is a complete ****hole of a station, worst thing they ever did was close the original on station road (where the signal box is for those that don't know where the original site is) eventhough it closed well before i came into this world.I did hear a while ago that there was a chance of NR moving the station back to the original site but as with most thing around Billingham it was just a rumour, although i do wish eaglescliffe could get some loo's sorted out for when i have a prolonged wait for my london train;).

Wouldn't suprise me if Billingham gets some investment soon, it needs it and of course needs disabled access. Might actually be cheaper to just knock down the current one and build a better one.

I don't honestly think they will ever invest in billingham station, It's taking long enough to invest in the town centre as it is. Stockton, Thornaby and Norton are higher on the list than Billingham for money, Sorry thats a dig at stockton borough council. But a deserved one.

The article said that M'boro was Teesside's second busiest station. What's the first? Is it Thornaby? I find that hard to believe.

Boro station is a much nicer place to be these days...as long as you don't leave the station. Outside is still as suspect as ever.

I'd never heard about BR wanting to remove the roof at Darlington, but it wouldn't surprise me.
