That appears different from what I was expecting. I was under the impression a new platform was getting built on the north side (down Saltburn slow line).

That concept was part of the previous Middlesbrough Council led masterplan. The real world site constraints meant that a new platform and concourse to the north of the up/down slow lines was never a feasible option.

I've attached some detailed initial drawings, which outline the proposed arrangement for the new platform and track layout. These are still awaiting sign off by Network Rail's engineering and asset management teams, so could be subject to change, but they're a good barometer for what to expect from the package of works:

Thanks for uploading those. And welcome to the forums, I see this is only your first couple of posts.

Having zoomed in I can see in the small print the turnback siding has 278m standage, (10 car 800?) and P3 will be 150m, and its end is beyond the end of P2.

I suspect the 'new' platform will be the re-opening of the bay platform at the Saltburn end of platform 2. The new retail units are suppossed to be opening under where the currently closed carpark is once the work to fix the age deteriated supports for the carpark is completed. As for the rest of the plans .......

I used Middlesbrough today for the first time in a little while & realised the boarding had come down outside where the ticket office is. The old car park at the top of the ramp is now a seating area with a couple of big seats that double as a cover for the air con units for the newly refurbished shop units below. Also the new steps down to the subway are tiled now.
I'm really glad the boarding has gone as it's been up for at least a decade.

Yes it's coming along nicely at the moment! The new subway (or I guess extension to the existing subway) appears to be coming along nicely and is fitting out so can't be that far away from opening I suspect. I've attached a few photos from a few weeks ago showing the way down to the subway and the currently none public part of the subway extension (the second image was taken poking the phone over the green barrier in the first). Progress has been made since as well.

That bit of wood with the printed out "Way Out" etc has been removed & now has the tiling & a proper sign on now. If I hadn't had my grandson with me I would have probably taken a photo but was more concentrating on getting him up the stairs ok.

Edit: on a side note, I see I started this thread on 2nd March 2018 - 6 years ago. But the area outside the ticket office was closed long before that as I was a mature student at Teesside Uni at the time. I turned 40 during my time at uni and was even using Marton station as James Cook hadn't been opened.

I wonder if the team delivering it have been working on the new platform and associated infrastructure for this new platform at Bradford Forster Square.

It never got started in order for it to come to a sudden stop

But yes whilst I'm not quite as pessimistic as @Last Orders in that I do think it will eventually happen, I don't think it's happening any time soon.

It may be being done like Bradford i.e plan it and then announce it shortly after they start work on it.

With our new goverment keen to demonstrate investment its certainly a quick win poltically so I can certainly see it happening at some point.

@ainsworth74 Sorry for the scepticism but lets face it the project started in 2021 and we are now rapidly approaching 2025 and still nothing positive regarding platform 3 why. While having a nice fancy new entrance to the station and all the other work being done to improve the look of the station is very nice it was not the priority. The installation of the extra platform is crucial in order to increase capacity which is much needed in order to attract new travel destinations so why didn't they build the new platform first. The original £35m has gone we are now looking at other funding in which we are having to compete with other nation wide projects so good luck with that, perhaps Reading station can send us a few million from their £895m hey shouldn't miss it

Isn't the area between the station and the river a massive redevelopment area, which maybe could help fund the new platform?

Who was orginally funding it ?

Interestingly there is a platform extension plan for Leeds station between £20 & £25 million. Which I believe is a much more recently developed scheme.

£14.9m is supposedly comming from the Rail Network Enhancement Pipeline Fund.

At the meeting of the Tees Valley Combined Authorities Transport sub-committee on 22 November the subject of this station and platform 3 came up in the papers:

Middlesbrough Station

The phase 2 redevelopment of the station undercroft is being delivered by Network Rail with a funding contribution from TVCA. The station concourse has been completed and the new station entrance is already in use. The final phase is the completion of two new business units, which will be finished in late 2024.

TVCA is in contract with Network Rail for phase 3 of the project development to deliver additional capacity at the station to improve performance and reliability and enable an expansion of services. Detailed discussions with London North Eastern Railway (LNER), TransPennine Express (TPE) and Northern regarding infrastructure requirements are ongoing. Completion of outline designs, costs and an assured delivery programme are due in August 2025. The delivery programme outlined in Appendix 1 is indicative at this stage.

Least it’s getting done is what I can say about it, some funding was given to us last year which would “speed up delivery of this” this has since been on review waiting confirmation in spring , if we end up getting this maybe timescales will be brought forward

No spades anywhere near the ground. Looking at the Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet papers for their most recent meeting (28 March 2025), specifically the attached document, suggests that they're still working on project development which is expected to conclude in August 2025. Project delivery is expected to commence in January 2026 with completion in March 2027.

The document also has various other updates but they would be matters for alternative threads
