Michigan Central Station: The story of its rise, fall and...

For several decades, millions passed through Motor City's majestic rail station which served as a portal to America's heartland. But as the auto-industry slumped and the local economy collapsed, the station saw less and less traffic. Since the last train left in 1988, the once-regal station has come to symbolise Detroit's economic woes and has become a favourite canvas for graffiti artists. But mysterious plans are now in the works to renovate the building, starting with the replacement of over 1,000 blown-out windows....

The disused Detroit station is to have 1000 windows replaced at the start of a restoration project. It seems this building will not be left to deteriorate further. (Thanks to Yorkie for sprucing up my thread).

Even in its ruinous state, it still looks beautiful. Here's hoping its restored soon.

What is it about Amtrack? I've just taken a whistlestop tour of various Amtrak stations around Michigan, courtesy of Google Earth and Streetview, and it's weird! America is not exactly unknown for its advertising culture, with huge signs and billboards all over the place, yet today's Amtrak stations, with their single short platforms shoehorned alongside what sometimes appear to be industrial sidings, are often almost invisible. They seem to occupy these low key 'pizza restaurant' style buildings well away from the grand old sites like Detroit's old Michigan Central, yet whilst that is perhaps understandable given today's low passenger traffic levels, they also seem devoid of conspicuous signage, almost as if trying to hide their presence altogether!

When it's ready, if they want some trains there will probably be a few Pacers going spare.
