just wondering what happens if the ticket machines aint working at a station how do you go about getting a ticket? (as you cant buy on the tram) on there site it says if this happens to ring them but if you in a rush to get somewhere this isn’t much help just wondering if this has happened to you or any ideas what will happen in the case of this eventuality

I'd just get on a tram and if a jobsworth comes along tell them. If they refuse to co-operate, see them in court. It's their responsibility to ensure their machines are working, not yours.

I've gone from Crumpsall to Piccadilly without a ticket before, and had ticket checks in the city centre.

I simply explained that I didn't have the change, and was going to pay by the pound note I had in my pocket, but the machines' note bit was sealed up.

The ticket inspector guy said "Ok, just buy a return on the way back"

They are quite strict on Metrolink with tickets. If you are lucky, then you can do a full Manchester-Bury return run without getting checked, therefore saving yourself £3.50! Although, I don't chance it, as the penalty is £80, and 9/10 of the ticket inspectors on Metrolink are jobsworths...

Often if ticket machines are out of use for some period of time, the RPI's will head up there with portable machines and issue tickets. 'jumping the tram' as its known here, is getting more difficult these days, there are 2 teams of RPI's about on the network as well as carslile security officers who patrol the trams, checking tickets (but the best they can do is chuck you off as they can't issue penalty fares without the RPI's)

I was on a first capital connect service not long ago and that happened to me the ticket collector ignored what I was trying to say to him and slapped me with a £20.00 fine again adding to my endless list of complaints about FCC!!!

I've been done by an RPI on metrolink before when the ticket machine was out of order - they took me off the train and issued me with one though. Thankfully I didn't get a fine - I would have refused to pay anyway, but its the principle!
