I posted a reply earlier (about dress code & footwear), but it hasn't appeared yet, this one may do the same, so sorry if the information is too late and out of context...

RRV's explanation about the maths and English tests is far better than I would have explained it, and it really is nothing to worry about. Once again, as I have said regards other parts of the tests, stay calm, don't panic - and I must say again that the staff at Metrolink were excellent on the day at emphasising this. They were very helpful in ensuring that you understood what was needed in every test and how it should be done.

None of the testing is trick questions, and there is nothing to be scared of.

Im going to ask another one of those inane questions again! as I know most of what is going to happen during the day so far. And I know that those who have been through the process with Metrolink say the people make you feel at ease etc etc.

So the only thing nagging in my brain is the Rules test; are these loosely based around some form of light rail rules & regs? Similar to the TRAINABILITY FOR RULES AND PROCEDURES as used for NR? Or something different?

Arghh! Don't do that to me a couple of days before, using another abbreviation I'd never heard of for another test, lol. I think RRV said a few pages back that the rules test consisted of short paragraphs of text with a few multiple choice questions after each; Is that right anyone who's done the assessments? or does it include audio and longer sections of text like GLOP?

No. It's a simple rules passage followed by 4 statements. One of which is true and your job is to find it! I found there was plenty of time to do the test and then go back and review my answers so don't panic. Some of the sentences are a little ambiguous to say the least!!

Thanks RRV, that does sound a whole lot better! Although the GLOP test wasnt that hard if i can remember.

Well I failed quite appallingly. I did the walk of shame after the first 2 assessments! But have to wait until tomorrow to get feedback on what it is I actually failed on. I think it may have been the dials test. Who knows, I will let you all know!

Sorry to hear this Matt . That makes me even more nervous for next week!!

Awww, mate, that's a shame... I was wondering why I didn't see anyone with a 'Matt' name tag on in the afternoon; I thought you might have a different name in person! The dials test was a bit of thrower for everyone; over 40 questions in 8 minutes is a tough one! I think I got to about q30 though; most people seemed to say they got about halfway or just over. The rules one was a bit tricky too I thought, as some of the answers required a bit more working out than I was expecting. So I wouldn't be disheartened if you just missed out on either; I'm sure you can use the experience and give it a better shot next time

I'm pleased to say I got through the other tests and got the opportunity to do the practical tram driving test, which was fantastic (not to rub it in, sorry). I did a poor interview though :cry:, so will have to wait and see how I did. Fingers crossed; They are notifying candidates by post next week.

Thanks guys! just had my feedback! from metrolink and I was 1 question away from the pass mark of 18 correct questions on the dials. (quite frustrating really) I also passed the rules test with 24 correct questions.

They suggested that I should apply apply again in Feb; and they might be able to squeeze me into the last round of applicants, as i have to wait 6 months before doing the test again. So all in all quite positive, if you can see where i'm coming from!

Thanks mate. If I do get through they are already up to April and May for start dates now, so count yourself very lucky to be starting in January!

I thought the process was good actually. It was apparent that they were a little bit new to running assessment days, but they were very clear and helpful about every stage and knew exactly what they wanted. While it was really nerve racking doing the tests in the morning they did do a very good job of relaxing everyone and ultimately it was quite enjoyable to go through everything (well, maybe more different than enjoyable). Obviously getting to drive a tram for 10 minutes as a practical was the highlight for me, which made the day worthwhile even if I don't end up passing The only downpoint for me (that isn't even a downpoint really) is that the afternoon was conducted so informally that it's left it very hard for me to tell how well it went.... when you're laughing and joking with people who are then assessing you, it leaves no clue as to what they will have marked!! :/

I'm pretty sure that this assessment day does not count a One of your Two chances.

Yeah I was also going to suggest you give them a call to confirm. I would be very surprised if it did count though, as they aren't an actual TOC and they don't do all the tests that are required of TOCs, just some of them.

Well unfortunately, I too failed on the first two tests . I have to wait until New Year for feedback though. I am absolutely gutted. I got through the dials test ok (well I think I did), getting to Q25. But on the rules test I had a mental block. Nothing I was reading was sinking in. That’s the part that is frustrating me :-x !! It took me the first 10 minutes to answer the first set of questions. After that I was fine. I put it down to nerves. I kind of knew that I’d messed up. She also said we can re-apply in 6 months time, which I will be doing.

Congratulations matey !

Great Christmas present. Mine was getting my contract through last week.

Don't worry if things take time to happen, they warned me at interview that they might and to be honest, they have - though that is not the same for everyone, it is just a timing thing. Worth the wait I think !

I can say, from experience, that if you need to ring them to check up on progress and dates, just do it - all the HR team are really helpful and will tell you all you want to know.

Really pleased for you - you will soon be joining me and at least one other FM for the training !!

Having started just before christmas i can tell you the training is really interesting and enjoyable. You definately have to put the work in but the trainers are superb and make it a pleasure.
