travlled back to Ashton on 3020 last night sounding a bit tried now that one

The Rochdale-Ashton and Shaw-Exchange Square routes appear to be the routes were the new trams operate.

The new trams can operate on the entire system but since the original trams (I think up to around 3060 or 3070) can't operate on the new lines due to differences in signalling, then the newer trams are going to be more common on services which wholly use recent extensions to make sure that the first batches are able to run on the original lines.

Other way round. Trams up to 3063 can operate across the entire system; but those from 3064 upwards cannot venture south of Timperley or north of Heaton Park, as those section are still managed by block-controlled signalling, and trams using these bits still need to be ATS equipped. The Bury section is due to switch over to Line-of-Sight in the near future though, so it will only be the bits of alignment still under NR control that will be limited.

There is work being done on the NR track to install TMS loops as well, but NR have so-far only agreed to them being used for information (TMS drives the PIDs at stops; Altrincham stop doesn't show when trams are due) and not for signalling control.

Metrolink and NR are negotiating on this - apparently the problem is the level crossing.

Some of the early M5000s were restricted from venturing onto the new line-of-sight-only lines, by this point have they all been converted to allow any unit to operate the new routes?

I don't think any trams 3061 and above can travel on Altrincham and Bury lines

Ah yes, now you mention it i do recall having 3089 on an Eccles service. Either misread again or BTO is telling porkies.

When the first M5000s were delivered, the junction at Cornbrook was block signalled, but presumably when this became line of sight the whole fleet could then operate on the Eccless line.

What is the difference between the two signalling systems?

The Altrincham and Bury lines originally had railway-style track circuit block with two-aspect colour light signals plus some repeaters.

The system is going over to drive by sight like road vehicles, with signals only where lines cross each other, or merge or divide, plus at most places where they cross (or join) roads.

The on-street city centre section already had such a system.

Where it's drive-by-sight, signals are horizontal or vertical rows of five white lights.

I'll leave it for others to explain the role of mass detectors, axle counters etc.

Noting the title of this thread, how many of the last fleet order still have to enter service?
Currently up to 3116 has been delivered AFAIK, with up to 3115 in order - unless I've missed a report somewhere this leaves four to be delivered (3117-3120) with five (3116-3120) to enter service.

Ah, so line of sight is basically using Mk1 eyeball
