I sent an email to customer services yesterday morning and they replied this afternoon to say:

"Sorry, there has been some confusion regarding armed forces travelling for free with their MOD90s id.

I can confirm that the appeal has been upheld, and retraining will be given to all ticket inspector regarding issuing of penalties.

Please accept our apologies on the matter."

They ignored by request for £150 compensation to be donated to Help for Heroes!

Thanks all for your help!

That's good news - although as you say a donation would have been nice.

Just in case (because they've already messed up once) make sure you keep a copy of their email so that you can show it to them if they do try to pursue the matter any further.

I'd scan their letter and keep a copy on your phone for any further incidents

Glad to see that the right outcome was eventually reached!

Honestly nothing should really surprise me anymore with how shoddy this industry is in it's practices in relation to revenue protection but even by railway industry standards this was extraordinarily poor.
