Metrolink Fares

I'm trying to find out a fare on Metrolink to determine what to do about the Greater Manchester marathon next weekend.

I'm staying overnight at Salford Quays after arriving into Piccadilly, then returning the next day.

I've been on the TfGM website to find out a single fare, and can only find prices for day and weekend Travelcards.

Is this really the case? Do I have to pay a fiver for a single journey?

The Ticket Selector on the Metrolink website says it's £2.80 for an off-peak adult single between Piccadilly and Salford Quays.

Looks like a weekend travelcard's a good-value option, then.

If you're taking part in the marathon I think there are some Metrolink special offers; plus 2 for 1 tickets if you're just spectating.

If you want to travel around the Quays at all it's the same price to Eccles:

Eccles railway station and Eccles Metrolink stop are both somewhat further away from the Salford Quays complex than the various more localised Manchester Metrolink stops.

I've actually got a pair of 11 quid Advances to get me to Piccadilly, so it's really only the Metrolink add-on I'm after.

Is the weekend travelcard (£5.80?) only valid on Metrolink, or buses and trains too?

That's Metrolink only - and great value compared to their other tickets (even better if you can find someone to join you is the £8 Family version).

The might be problem with that as engineering work taking place on Saturday 5th April mean no tram service on Altrincham, Eccles/MediaCity and Chorlton/Didsbury line.

Joined up thinking. The powers that be didn't imagine there'd be many people in Salford the night before a marathon starting there, then? :roll:

The leaflets given out about network transformation state they will not effect the bupa run on the 4th of May?

This seems like the place to have a rant about the Metrolink ATM at Rochdale Railway Station, which I encountered yesterday.
I thought I would complete my Metrolink education by trying the new Rochdale Station-Town Centre extension.
I started tapping on the sole ATM touch-screen, to find that "Rochdale" was not on the top screen so it would need searching for.
However, the "R" for Rochdale Town Centre returned the next screen for "Q" (Queens Road).
The only fare I could purchase to get me to Rochdale Town Centre and back was a £5 travelcard ticket, which I was not prepared to buy.

After a dozen unsuccessful attempts at jabbing different bits of the "R" square and still getting the "Q" results, a tram turned up and left without me.
So I walked the half-mile or so to the town centre and bought a single ticket back to the station there (an eye-watering £1.40).
The PIS at both stops displayed "A 12-minute service is operating from this stop". True but not exactly informative. Why doesn't it show departure times or "Expected in x mins".
First ever visit to Rochdale. Some impressive buildings. Not impressed by Metrolink "soft" product, though.

The timetable for Rochdale Town Centre hasn't been put onto the TMS system yet hence why PIDs on the SML can display Rochdale Railway Station until the tram approaches and detect the tram has the Town Centre TMS code not the Railway Station code.

I did the RRS-RTC run a few weeks ago and I didn't encounter any issues with the TVM, maybe a glitch?

Metrolink pricing is similar to bus fares. Travel 1 stop and the single fare offers very poor value for money. Travel from a southern to a northern extreme of the day ticket area e.g. Altrincham-Bury and you get a good value for money ticket.

Yes, I thought Altrincham-Rochdale and back one evening last week for £5 was excellent value. Especially the rollercoaster from Oldham King Street down to Werneth.
