There was obviously a fire at the Co-Operative Building in Balloon Street in Manchester last night which shut the Metrolink between Market Street to Victoria.

From what I gather the line re-opened this morning but as the Co-Operative building has now been declared unsafe this afternoon the line has closed again and Metrolink has said that the line could be closed for several days while the building is made safe.

With St Peter's Square running at a very reduced service compared to normal and the other main route out of Manchester City Centre now closed the Metrolink seems like its going to severely disrupted over the next few days.

They should build another route through the city to minimise the disruption

Was this the building at the corner of Corporation Street and Balloon Street that has been shrouded in some coverings for some time or was it the next Co-operative building further up Balloon Street?

I think it was the disused CIS building, not the Co-op Bank one.

It was a former Co-operative Group building that caught fire. There are several Co-op buildings round there:

CIS Tower - the large 60's style tower block
New Century House - the smaller tower block (so named because it was built in 1963 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Co-operative Wholesale Society)
Hanover Building - this is the building that fronts onto Corporation Street (and the one that caught fire)
Old Bank Building - also fronts Corporation Street and is attached to New Century House
Dantzic Building - located between the Hanover Building and the CIS Tower on Dantzic Street
Federation Building - adjoins Dantzic building
Redfern Building - located on Dantzic Street n the junction with Mayes Street.

There is also the Headquarters of the Co-operative Bank at 1 Balloon Street (on the corner of Balloon Street and Corporations Street)

In 2013 the Co-operative Group moved into their new Headquarters Building at 1 Angel Square. The CIS Tower and 1 Balloon Street are still used by Co-operative Insurance and the Co-operative Bank. All the vacated building are now part of the NOMA development, a joint venture between the Co-operative Group and Hermes Real Estate to refurbish the buildings and bring them back into use.

Thanks for that - I had no idea the Co-op Group had so many buildings in Manchester City Centre (and I used to work for them!) Perhaps "The Northern Quarter" should be better named "The Co-op Quarter"!
