Metrolink Canopies - Whitefield

Interesting question raised by a civil engineer friend - setting aside how ugly they are, does anyone here know why the canopies at Whitefield station on the Manchester Metrolink are effectively built upside down - ie the 'roof' part of the canopy is attached to the underside of the steel beans rather than the top. I'll try and add a photo to show what I mean.

I don’t know why, but they’ve been like that for a long time! I took the photo at the Flickr link below in 1983.

I would think it’s so they look tidier underneath and the passengers have a pleasanter view.

This photo from Wikipedia shows that Crumpsall also had similar canpoies, held up by a steel I beam, in 1988 when the photo was taken and, from memory, until the third platform was added there. There might be other similar canopies on the same line.
