I'm stealing this from Russell Howard, but the Daily Express's stereotyical headline is:

"DON'T GO OUTSIDE!!!"
"It's full of queers, blacks and crime!"
"If only Diana was here..."

The Mail is a paper which angers me. I try to read it, but it's so full of hatred for everyone and everything under the sun. And their stories are ridiculous and include, amongst others, a revelation that the SNP want to "Break up Britain" (congratulations on that excellent observation :roll: ), "Thank God my sick mother wasn't at the mercy of the NHS" (a slander story, saying little more than that his mother's received good care in America, but the immigrant nurses would have killed her from MRSA in the UK) and a suggestion that smoking saves the NHS money because it kills you off earlier.

and the rest look as if they've just searched through a few of the other newspaper's websites and wrote a few lines on it

We always knew it at school as the paper to read for yesterday's news

I always found the letters section good, and we sometomes had competitions between a few of us in my year to see who could do the sudoku first

Although the anti-javelin things were letters, I don't believe they are genuine letters that have been sent in by real people.

Also, earlier in the year they also printed a comparison between a journey on a new Italian dedicated high speed line and our West Coast Mainline. They didn't mention the fact the WCML also has freight, local services and corners to contend with at all and (to the general public, who doesn't know as much about these things as us) they made it look like cr@p, which I believe is rather unfair to the many people who have, and continue to, work hard to make it happen.

I usually just get it for that, TBH

It's quite a shock when you go down south and they have a different letters page... and I think Edinburgh is unique in that Metros are generally neatly folded on seats, left on tables or put back in racks - caught a tube train once where they had all been chucked on the floor!

As someone who was a software games tester when he was 13, I do have to say that I am pretty certain that there's an influence - the same as from certain types of music.

The Bobo doll Study has shown this throughout time. Even when certain factors have been changed - music, Video Games, Violent TV etc.

Anyways - I read the Metro daily into university, and I don't ever notice the "anti reailway comments" I only ever notice them in the bits which the readers write in saying... So in that respect, I only see it as those being chosen... Fair enough, Metro could use anyones point, but they just chose to use someone who doesn't like the javelin that day. I have seenmany readers with opinions shown who are happy for their service etc

Even in Glasgow, they end up everywhere. The subway here's absolutely ridiculous with Metros. I normally fold mine neatly on the table/chair in the hope that someone else will get a read. IMO, it's scandalous that they're thrown out when so many people would happily pick one up on the train at 1pm. Or even on the commute home. Alas, most of them are in the bin by 9am to keep the SQUIRE teams happy.

I'm all for SQUIRE, but I don't think the Metros should count as litter provided they're neatly placed on the train.

I know the Scots letter page is different and that there's a lot of regional variation in the content of the paper itself. If some parts of the country are more anti-rail than others, this may show up in the regional letters page.

They're not even about Madeleine McCann, but rather the parents. The parents who will no doubt be trying to replace the Queen's Speech on Xmas Day to speak about needing more money for their fund.

A fund that seems to be paying for anything but searching for Madeleine.

But back to the talk about the new trains and HS1, I thought the press had been very positive about it. No doubt most got invited along to the official opening and a free ticket or two (I got some first class tickets when I went to the HEX launch of on-board Wi-Fi!) so felt compelled to be nice.

Actually, I can think of many things the press should be reporting on with regards to HS1 - when it comes to pricing, ticketing and passenger information in and around St Pancras. But, the press can't be bothered with that nonsense as it no doubt sounds 'geeky'.

Just like the BBC said about the many people who are complaining that the BBC has cut its HD broadcasting quality in half - those who can see the drop in bitrates and see how poor it is are just 'nerds'. I bet they'd be up in arms if they found Apple cutting the bitrate in half on their music downloads from iTunes!

Although I blamed them for being anti-rail, they did report positively about the Queen using a normal service train to get to Sandringham.
