...to allow for engineering work, on Monday - Wednesday nights between Wembley Park and Aldgate.

From the TfL website: https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/improvements-and-projects/metropolitan-line-weekday-closures

"From Monday 16 May until late 2018 the Metropolitan line will close earlier than normal between Aldgate and Wembley Park. From approximately 22:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays track and drainage work will be taking place between Baker Street and Finchley Road."

The service will also start up slightly later on Tuesday - Thursday, with the first 3 trains cancelled.

Rather like what they did during the Victoria line upgrade a few years ago, although at least customers will be able to use the Circle & Hammersmith and Jubilee lines, and Chiltern services. Not sure whether Chiltern are strengthening their services or running additional services like during weekend engineering on the Met.

Once you start reading it, it doesn't look that bad. Its just the fact that it will take them over 2 years to complete this work!

I wonder how long it would take if they had a full closure?

LU as chosen to extend its evening engineering hours so the work can be completed in around two years. The alternative would involve either a full closure of this section of line for almost six months or a very large number of weekend closures over seven years.

This seems to be the best solution then - especially seeing as there are plenty of alternative travel arrangements available.
