It would cost me 14.60 for a Southport - Stockport return, offpeak. Yet If I got a Wigan to Southport return (7.40) and a Wigan - Stockport return (3.60) I would save myself 3.60 and could still do the same trip? Why the big difference?

The Wigan - Stockport ticket price is set by GMPTE, so that is why it is cheaper. Same as other PTE areas.

Sure does, plenty of examples such as Leeds to Doncaster, £8.25 Anytime Day Return, yet Leeds - Sandal and Agbrigg is £3.30 Anytime Day Return and Sandal and Agbrigg to Doncaster is £4.50 Anytime Day Return (all with a railcard), saving a bit. Even more can be saved as there is an off peak day return between Leeds and Sandal. All this beacuse Leeds to Sandal is within Metro (WYPTE).

Fare anomalies are common across the entire country.

Liverpool S Parkway to Wigan Stns is £9.40
Liverpool Stns to Wigan Stns is £6.90 and is valid via Liverpool S Parkway

Certain people on this forum can save you an awful lot of money with their knowledge of all the little loopholes

As someone living on the Southport line, split your ticket at Appley Bridge. Southport-- Appley Bridge is £6.90, then it's still 3.60 from there to stockport.... A whole £10.50 :)

I am still waiting a reply from my complaints of their rises to Anytime fares from some stations to Liverpool of 34% and also the fact that passengers from unmanned stations are not being offered the cheapest fares at off-peak times.

They've got until the end of the month before I take it further.

I live in Derbyshire and regularly trek into and on the other side of GMPTE zone. Some fares need some real tracking down, I often split twice if I'm going just outside the boundary to somewhere like Garswood outside the boundary. I went to Squires Gate on Saturday and with a Y-P railcard split at Disley and got there £1.45 cheaper! A full 10% cheaper, the guard was even shocked, to be fair I was having done that trip twice before.

I now travel regularly with a mate and we have both learnt of some anomalies and know where to split and generally how to get a good priced fare. Except CEF to STA which were still struggling on!

That's super! But that would mean me travelling to Appley Bridge (I live near Wigan Wallgate) so I would spend that saving travelling in the car! lol
