No, no plans for extending Merseyrail in fact Peel have been quite resistant to investing in public transport for the project apart from their plan to have a self contained people mover system along the waterfront similar in appearance to the trolley cars of San Francisco that would serve a commuter(in the sense of moving people about the development rather than mass transit to and from work)/tourist role.

The Wirral Waters development (as I think I mentioned somewhere else on the forum) could have provided the catalyst to develop both the ferry port at Twelve Quays and for a rail link from Rock Ferry (much of it over disused trackbed). There could have been a new station at the heart of the development which could have a direct link to London by extending the Euston - Chester service. Is Wirral (a borough with around 320'000 inhabitants) the largest without a direct train service to London ?

Almost, Kirklees (Huddersfield) and Bradford are larger without regular directs I think.

I could easily see a London service from Hooton doing well, platform space, a big car park and the station situated close by the motorway. Pity there seems to be no desire to push for it

Unless it was hourly or heavily discounted I doubt it, Chester is nearby and is hourly, or Crewe a little further, a big car park and 2tph.

Only if they were extensions of those Chester trains that don't run onto the North Wales line.

And believe it or not, quite a lot of people on the Wirral use Lime Street; it being part of the same conurbation as Liverpool and all.

In all honesty Hooton has pretty good has good links to Chester and Liverpool. They have good connections to London. Hooton has no more need of a direct service to London than Croydon does to Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Chester traffic is often a nightmare, and parking is limited.
Hooton as a Chester Parkway station would do well. Even better if there were a very late train out of Euston that theatre goers could use. People would drive from 20 miles away or more.
The infrastructure is all in place, just waiting for service. And there is lots of room to expand the car park since this would then become necessary.

A bit like Bradford being part of the same conurbation as Leeds - yet having services to the capital from two of it's stations.

And what's it got to do with the title of the thread? Nothing. Makes Olaf feel better about himself though.

Go back through teh thread to see what was previously discussed.

Peel indeed saying they have pulled out of the ITC in Wirral Waters, they no longer want to be involved with these kind of property developments according to the Chairman. Their Chinese financiers Sam Wa will be taking full ownership of the proposed development project.

No idea what your talking about with national funding though, Wirral Waters received a £3m European Regional Development Fund grant to decontaminate the land and make it fit for development, there was no ERDF funding for Manchester Airport LEZ. Wirral waters received £5.5m from Government to build infrastructure for the LEZ while Manchester Airport LEZ was awarded £6m.

There is an article in the FT from 2013 regarding the Shanghai based backer of the ITC - Peel got itself involved with a questionable organisation.

Meanwhile the more reputable organisations from China have placed their investments in Manchester and London, not Merseyside.

Hooton would much better serve those in south west Wirral looking to park and ride.

It also has 2tph better connections to east Wirral and direct connections to the Ellesmere port branch.

What would a diagram look like though does anyone know the dwell times each end of the Chester Euston service?

I spotted today there was a stack of shiny scaffolding plus tools on the Hunts Cross bound platform at St James today. Is some work/surveying about to begin or are they just cutting back the vegetation that has sprung up?

Consultation has opened for the proposed Maghull North station.

http://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/about-us/Pages/MaghullNorth.aspx

Maghull North will see major investment at School Lane, Maghull for a new railway station on the Liverpool to Ormskirk branch of the Merseyrail Northern Line. The development is an example of Merseytravel’s Long Term Rail Strategy being put into action – a 30 year vision to improve connections within the Liverpool City Region and beyond. This, in turn, fits with plans to improve connections across the whole of the north. The scheme also forms part of the wider £340m investment by Network Rail and the Liverpool City Region in rail improvements over the next three years.
A planning application has been submitted to Sefton Council and will be determined in early 2017. The new station will include:

  • Staffed station building with ticket office.
  • Lifts and steps to each platform via a pedestrian footbridge from the station building.
  • 156 space car park with blue badge and motor cycle parking and cycle storage.
  • Customer Information Screens with real time running in the station building and on the platforms.
  • Pedestrian and cycle routes from School Lane and Park Lane to the station building, along with bus stops on School Lane.
  • Passenger waiting facilities on platform.
  • Passenger toilet.
  • Step-free access to, from and between both platforms and the station building.
  • Future provision for electric vehicle charging points.

1. That Merseyrail could decide if it is an urban metro-style railway or a suburban/regional one. If the latter, increasing the number of stations will slow down journeys intolerable. But the former would allow areas of Merseyside to have more effective and quicker links to the city centre.
2. Re-opening the Wapping and/or Waterloo tunnels (and rebuilding the flyover at Edge Hill) would take the pressure off Lime street.
3. Linking (as was originally proposed and as the construction allows) the Wapping line with the Northern Line into Central would allow Ormskirk and Kirkby trains to run through and out to e.g.. St Helens, easing congestion at Central.
4. Re-opening the Bootle branch to passenger trains (London Overground copes with a mixture of freight and passengers on some lines, so Merseyrail could)
5. Providing a metro-style service on the slow lines from Parkway linking via the tunnels as above.
6. New stations on the Bootle branch (Tue Brook, Anfield...?); at St James (renamed to avoid confusion with James St); at Smithdown Road; University.
7. If the Northern line was getting overloaded with the above, re-open the rest of the Wapping tunnel and extend (cut and cover?) northwards to terminate at James Street: convenient for Liverpool One and the business district.

It's a bit of both. Indeed, it is an absolute textbook S-Bahn on the German model - the only ways it strays away is staffed stations and guards.

Some nice refurbishments have appeared from behind hoardings at Green Lane and James Street.
Green Lane now sports attractive murals on the north wall, reflecting the local shipbuilding heritage.
At James Street the old non-modernized platform has gained new period signage and recessed lighting.
Small things,but nice to see.
Makes waiting at these subterranean places just a little more attractive.

I think it's that old familiar ring of financial reality for both Skelmersdale and Headbolt. Lancashire County Council used to speak quite enthusiastically about the former, but even they've gone deadly quiet.

In no way has skem gone quiet. Grip2 was completed June last year. They commisioned Grip 3 this year and a few months later another study from NR on which of the two possible station sites to use. Grip3 is due by Jan.

I've said this all along. I'm wary of going off topic so I'll just say this. Without HS2 there would now, right now, be a station at Skelmersdale. Fact.

That's a good one, justify it. The majority of HS2 spend has not been made (what £800m so far) and the workforce not hired. How would a station, branch line and electrification work costed at £300-450m have been built already?
