I know this is valid for use on the ferries, but is it just a single, or is it a return journey?

Unlimited travel, but you must go to the ferry terminal office before every single journey and present your saveaway, where you will be given a boarding pass.
Presumably this is so that the ferry company can bill Merseytravel accordingly.
