Merseyrail photographic issue.

I was approached and harassed for having a camera around my next at Liverpool Central yesterday, I`d been on the platform for two minutes to change trains and this young lad came up to me, didn't identify himself, but started reading the riot act about needing written permission to take photographs on Merseyrail, I told him I was just changing trains and hadn't actual taken any photographs and also informed him about the Network Rail and BTP photographic guidance, but he said clearly this was a Merseyrail rule. I asked him to show me it in writing where this rule was and how the public access such rules, and he simply said he had been told this?? Nothing appears to be listed on Merseyrails website, its not a bylaw or in the terms and conditions so doesnt appear to have any legal standing, does anyone have any information about such a rule? The lad was apparently working for Carlisle Security, a company who are known for poor staff training. I thought I`d best bring this to the attention of members while the old stock is about to be replaced, I expect a few will be travelling around Merseyrail with cameras.

Its happened to me before. I grabbed a photo of a train I was about to board at Liverpool Central and was pursued onto it by a female member of staff.

She asked me what I thought I was doing and said terrorism meant that photography was completely banned at Liverpool Central as it's "different to everywhere else".

When she realised I wasn't in the least bit bothered she sauntered off. She was an actual Merseyrail staff member.

So, not even a Merseyrail issue, a Liverpool Central issue for me too!

The only other time I've been accosted ever is at Luton, and that staff member was so busy yelling at me for photographing a 387 that he was ignoring an elderly woman needing help with luggage! Again, that was another acknowledgement that the photography guidelines exist, but that Luton is somehow "special".

Liverpool Central's platforms are small and very, very crowded, so I can sort of see why they might want to discourage it there specifically for safety reasons and so you don't get in the way of people. The light conditions aren't great anyway. There are far better places to photograph units.

Have you approached Merseyrail to report the incident and ask what the policy is?

I was a passenger changing trains and I only had a camera around my neck, not actually taking pictures, yes I`ll report it, I asked station staff on my return as the original security boff had gone, and the staff told me there was no issues.
