Merseyrail engineering works

I note that Merseyrail have the Chester - Hooton line closed for a week between 21/02/11 & 25/02/11, (the line is also closed from Chester/Ellesmere Port to Rock Ferry today).

I presume that today's closure will be to assist with removing the old footbridge at Hooton. I can't find anything to say what the closure for the rest of the week involves though.

Also, is there any particular reason that Merseyrail can't seemingly be bothered to put times on their website for the replacement bus services? Looking at the NR website today, it (helpfully) sends me via Wigan, which isn't much good if you have a Merseyrail "Railpass" ticket.

I know that track improvement work is being done at Chester this weekend. I can currently see from my apartment window that platform 7 (that Merseyrail use) does not have any track! They've cleared the track bed and are currently putting down a sandy-looking material... plenty of machinery/wagons and also some new track ready to go down.
The letter I received from Network Rail about the possibilities of noise stated that the work is being undertaken until 06:00 Tuesday 22 Feb, so that accounts for some of the closure time. Not sure about the rest of the week though.

Substantial track relaying. Linespeed is to be increased (eventually) between Hooton and Chester resulting in better performance (not necessarily journey times though!).

Its one thing that bugs me about railway closures; there seems to be an aversion to giving fuller details about what work is actually going on and why.

We have to do it for roads, after all. I think people would be a bit more understanding of the disruption rather than thinking "oh we have to use a bus again this weekend so they dont have to run trains".

After all, with highways, the results are plainly visible to users. You dont see that from the window of a train. And the information doesnt even have to go in to a great amount of detail. Just a "what work is being done and why".

I agree even when you ask the staff they don't even seem to know! It would be a good idea to inform the general public why and what the line is closed for - instead of "essential line improvements" because after three weekends of the same section being closed it wears thin even to me sorry my rant over maybe we should all petition NR to start publishing more info
