Hi and a Happy New Year to you all.

I was at Chester station last Friday evening around 16.00 waiting for a train back to Liverpool Central. We had bought a "Savaway All Zones" ticket that morning, firstly visiting "The Lady Lever Art Gallery" at Port Sunlight and then headed to Chester. The ticket cost £5.20.

An incident on the track (trespassing according to the announcer at Chester) near Bache meant that services were suspended, this was given about 16.40. However the message was mostly incomprehensible. After much waiting, we like many others made our way to the station manager's office to be informed that buses were going to be provided but with no guarantee as to when.

With no buses showing by 17.30 and as we needed to be in Liverpool urgently we decided to take a Stagecoach X8 back to Liverpool which cost us £3.50 each, the cost to the boundary for buses with a " Savaway" ticket.

We discovered later that things didn't get moving again till around 18.30. The incident was caused by a young lady threatenning suicide by jumping off a bridge into the path of an oncoming train. Thankfully there was a happy outcome.

My question to you is the following : I know it's not a large amount but are we justified in seeking for compensation from Merseyrail ?

I'm not sure you would get it as this was an incident completely out of their control. Perhaps somebody with more knowledge of such incidents may be able to advise you.

Miseryrail operates a Passenger Charter refund scheme rather than the newer DelayRepay. Therefore, compensation isn't offered for delays and issues outwith the control of the railway, which would include a member of the public threatening suicide.
