Personally, I think the station staff kicked up a bit of a fuss that the gates weren't operating as well as possible and eventually the management decided it would just be easier to sort it and be done with it for a couple of years.
Yes, I remember arriving at Liverpool Central and the queues were horrendous for the manual gates - absolute mayhem. No one using the auto-gates.
Now, I've noticed the company has put staff by the auto-gates, which seems more sensible, along with greater acceptance of tickets.
As an aside, Merseyrail has a very good policy on staffed stations, so it is usually very easy to obtain a ticket. It's a model for other TOCs.
