I decided to try the unique e-ticket experience offered by MerseyRail; I bought online an e-ticket Daysaver for 2 passengers. This was emailed to me as a PDF file. I was able to display it on my phone.

I boarded the train at an unbarriered station, travelled to Liverpool Central. I showed the ticket on my phone to the attendant at the wide gate as we were waved through. For the return journey, I showed the ticket on my phone; as before, we were waved through.

During the return trip there was an on train ticket check, the inspector had a look at the ticket on the phone and there was no problem. Although the ticket has a barcode on it (Aztec), this was not scanned at any of the checks.

I'm travelling again next week, but not sure whether I'll use this method, as one of the travellers could save 65p by using his Senior Railcard, and would therefore require a conventional ticket, so we might as well all get one.

Ordinarily, any
unique e-ticket experience
on Merseyrail involves being frogmarched to the naughty corner and a penalty fare. Truly unique.

Their Daysaver, in my opinion is a scam, and a revenue grab. The PTEs Saveaway, about 10p extra, is much better value which includes all non-Merseyrail trains, all buses and ferries.

Upon checking, it looks like no railcard discounts work with the Merseyrail-Electrics-Only daysaver. (brfares.com)

That ten pence is an excellent value insurance policy. In the very likely event of a 777 sitting down, you can switch to the bus (and enjoy the far better seats) without worrying about acceptance.

I get the Meresyrail Saveaway every day when I commute to work so paying the extra 10p is well worth it when the service falls over and I have to get the 47/X2 bus home to Southport.

It is correct that no Railcards work with the Daysaver.

I am the holder of a Lancashire CC issued ENCTS pass, so I can travel free of charge on local buses. If I had a Senior Railcard, I could make the round trip to Liverpool for £4.25, a saving of £2.15 per trip compared to the Daysaver by buying a different ticket which does allow the discount.

But for about 10 trips per year, the cost of the Railcard isn't justified. In the past, I have held a Railcard for making a trip to London or some other far-flung place. Then I can use discounted tickets for local trips too.

I just wanted to try the Daysaver e-Ticket which no other ticketing site sells, and see how it worked.
