I'm planning to use the Merseyrail Day Saver ticket. The tickets are sold with validity in '1 area' (£4.45) or in 'all areas' (£5.95).

I am trying to find out about the 'areas' and how they are defined. The official Merseyrail webpage linked above advises to 'use our Journey Planner to calculate the cost of your ticket.' However I am wondering if there is map that shows the 'areas' or some other type of schematic that defines what an area is?

It's just worth mentioning that the MerseyRail Daysaver is only valid on MerseyRail Northern and Wirral Line trains as per this map.
But the Merseytravel Saveaway is valid on trains buses and ferries in the whole area (or zones paid for) shown on the zone map. The MerseyRail Daysaver can only be bought at MerseyRail stations (or in a very strange way on MerseyRail's web site), whereas any version of the SaveAway can be bought at any ticket office, and in the Rovers and Ranger section of Northern Rail TVMs. If bought at a MerseyRail station it can only be loaded onto a Metro card. It can also be bought at PayPoint outlets.

If you hold a Railcard, and are only making one single or return journey (which you may break as many times as you wish over the course of a day), a single or return ticket from Meols Cop to Liverpool (or vice versa) valid via Southport is even cheaper than a single area Day Saver.

I see your location is shown as Manchester - may not be the case at all but if you are travelling in from Manchester by train on the same day, the Merseytravel All Zone Saveaway can be used on services into Liverpool from the boundary at Newton Le Willows/Hough Green (after 0930 of course).

Thank you very much @WirralLine. I am indeed based in Mancester so I will take advantage of your advice. Rail ticket to either Newton Le Willows/Hough Green then the all-areas Saveaway ticket from there.

May I ask a related question? I'm currently planning a trip from Edinburgh and the intention is to change at Preston and get the DMU from there to Ormskirk. I then want to use a day saver for the rest of the day. If I buy the ticket online, do I need to print it off at a TVM or do I just show it on my phone?

The MerseyRail Daysaver can be bought on MerseyRail's website but it's like no other ticket you have ever seen. You can't buy it online anywhere else. If I were you I would just nip into the Ormskirk station ticket office and buy one from the counter there. Then you'll have a normal CCST which will do everything you want. MerseyRail prefers old-fashioned style tickets. If you want a Merseytravel All Area SaveAway you can buy that at the ticket office in Edinburgh as a CCST, but if you try to buy it at Ormskirk you will need a MetroCard.

Sounds like the tickets bought online are sent by email (.pdf?)

You can now buy an All Area Adult and 18 and under Day Saver online. Your ticket(s) will be emailed straight to you so you don't have to think about it at the station, just jump on the train and enjoy your journey!

I'm going to use the Saveaway ticket, which I was unaware of until I opened this thread. It's also valid for travel on the bus and the Mersey Ferries. And the all area Saveaway (£6.30) is just £0.35 more expensive than the rail only all area Day Saver (£5.95).

Thanks. I knew I had read somewhere that there were issues with some Merseyrail tickets . Sounds like the SaveAway bought here is the solution.
