Docklands Light Railway fare evaders dodge almost £11m in decade

Staff are being placed at entrances and exits of the Docklands Light Railway to tackle fare evasion.

I'm not sure how it makes any difference whether it's contactless or not - the decision to gate or not gate stations is separate from that, as they could as well be fare dodging with(out) paper tickets.

It would help here if the Fast line platforms at Lime Street High Level were barriered. Quite apart from the amount of revenue lost from the likes of Runcorn.

Honestly the biggest problem I can see for this being a success is communications/marketing. It's the one thing Merseytravel consistently makes a mess of.

If you are looking for problems here is one for you.

Differentiating between the tourist hordes on the ferries and the locals using it to "cross the water", where the tourist pay substantially more for the "cruise" experience.

Not a problem at all actually as the commuter and cruise services don't overlap. Last morning commuter crossing sails at 9:40, cruise starts from 10:00-16:00 and commuter service picks back up at 17:00. Simples.

Something of an over-simplification. It is perfectly permissible to merely "cross the water" (@Djgr's wording) on the "cruise" timings during the day paying single-journey fares, using an all-zones SaveAway ticket, or with a Senior person's concessionary ticket. All that's required is to alight on "the other" side of the river from where you board - ie to make a single Liverpool to Seacombe or Seacombe to Liverpool trip.

But this isn't really Merseyrail related, as in the thread title, is it?

Yes, but as you'd be tapping out on the other side it would be picked up and treated as a regular trip by the Merseyrail smart ticketing if a SaveAway was loaded on the card, of if they decided to allow its use in this fashion.
