The 5:08 Sunset - Sunday 29th October 2023
Merseyrail and the Branch Line Society are delighted to announce The 5:08 Sunset, providing a fantastic opportunity to mark the impending withdrawal of the Class 508 EMU after more than 44 years of service to the travelling public and enthusiast alike. Travel with us across the entire Merseyrail third rail network as you sit back and relax, and enjoy the scenic views across both the Wirral and Northern Lines.
Highlights include the Stock Interchange Line and both EMU depots, along with the usual selection of sidings and crossovers we have become famous for! Read the specification carefully for the bidirectional running to appeal to the directionality enthusiasts!
Comfort breaks will be provided to use station facilities. At Southport, an extended leg stretch break will be available along with complimentary refreshments, thanks to our friends at Merseyrail.
Proceeds from the trip will be donated to four very deserving local charities:
KIND - helping children and families across Liverpool and Merseyside cope with the effects of poverty and disadvantage;
SWACA - supporting Sefton’s women, young people and children;
Paper Cup Project - a Liverpool charity which supports local rough sleepers and homeless people; and
Tam O'Shanter Cottage and Community Farm - aiming to provide an enjoyable and educational experience for kids and adults in Birkenhead.
Onboard, there will be an opportunity to purchase souvenirs for your special trip including window decals, and a charity raffle will give you the chance to win some fantastic prizes!
Not surprisingly, the traction will be a pair of Class 508s, subject of course to availability. Unfortunately though, the one thing we can't fix, sunset is expected to be at 16.48!
For those travelling by car, Hooton Station pay and display car park can accommodate over 400 vehicles.
All times and routing are indicative until confirmed by Network Rail. Final routing and timings are usually confirmed by Network Rail five days before travel and will be enclosed with your e-ticket.
