Merseyrail Area Day Saver

Hi everyone!

First post on RailUK, and it's basically just confirming something so I don't get fined!

My planned journey is as follows:

Little Sutton - 0622
Hooton (arr) - 0624
Hooton (dep) - 0637
Chester - 0656

Merseyrail class on-peak as 6:30am - 9:30am, therefore I am eligible to buy the cheaper day saver ticket for the Little Sutton - Hooton leg. However is it still valid for the Hooton - Chester leg? i.e. the journey is intended to travel from Little Sutton - Chester, but I have to change in the middle at Hooton. If peak time starts before my connection at Hooton departs, would a generic area day saver ticket be valid on this connecting service even though it is entirely in peak time?

Regarding your question, I would say it would not be valid as it does unfortunately fall into the peak time.

Yes. Merseyrail Day Saver tickets have an advertised ticket restriction "Day Savers are not valid for travel between 06.31 and 09.29, Monday to Friday ". Therefore any early morning rail travel using the ticket must be completed on a train scheduled to reach the passenger's destination not later than 06.30, Monday to Friday.

I have to disagree. Although the restriction does indeed say the above, you can in fact use it during peak time as long as your journey starts before 0631, and staff are told to accept off peak tickets in these circumstances. This also includes changing trains, as long as you stay on the station then it counts as the same journey.

The journey planner on the Merseyrail website confirms this.

I'm glad you disagree. In these circumstances, I would feel confident using the ticket on a journey continuing after 0630 M-F if I could carry a print-out of my journey with me showing that validity.

Sounds like they're applying the same restriction as advertised for Saveaways in Merseytravel's Guide to Saveaway Tickets leaflet

"Can be used off-peak only at the following times:- Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays –
anytime. Mondays to Fridays – anytime EXCEPT journeys scheduled to start between 6:31am
and 9:29am.

So if you want to be sure you're safe, spend the extra 10p and get a Saveaway instead of a Day Saver.

If I scan my Oyster card at 15.55 to start a journey (peak starts at 16.00), regardless of how far I travel, I pay the off peak fare. I use it to my advantage.

That does make sense we've been promised a similar system on Merseyside for quite a while, Merseytravel are supposed to be developing a 'Walrus' card I think, which should work in a similar way to Oyster cards. Don't quite know where they're up to with it though, I was under the impression it was due a few years back!

Interesting though, Merseyrail don't have an afternoon peak, just a morning peak - although I'm not complaining!

A lot of their Day single/returns are coded Y9 which bars travel 1600-1800 on the City line. They abandoned the afternoon peak for Saveaways in 2008.

Sorry, when I say Merseyrail I mean Wirral/Northern Lines, not the Merseyrail branding of the City Line - I should have made that clear, apologies!

There's still an afternoon peak restriction on the Off-peak Trio ticket (which is only available as an annual ticket)
