I seem to remeber some sweets like chewits but were green and white and I am positive they were called 'Stripes' but I cant seem to locate them on google.

Steady on there....

Is it because we were easier to please back then and got used to watching what happened to be the best on the box at the time?
Everything appears to be more magic when your young you can sit a kid in front of any old crap and they'll watch it .
I Watch UK GOLD or Challenge TV they help me with my Rose Tinted sight issues as watching those shows recently showed how poor they really are.

I agree that the quality of TV has severely declined in the last 15-20 years - Sitcoms in particular- they seem to copy the American Friend's style theme where everyone's successful, good looking and live in the same type of sitting room, the irony is the most ''British'' style humour on TV today is The Simpson's.
Comedy Drama style shows like Minder & Auf Wiedershen Pet were funnier than today's Sitcoms and dare I say it even Corrie & Emmerdale Farm during Stan & Hilda Ogden and Seth & Amos days.

From the railway side of things, the Friday night holidaymaker trains to the South-West of England. Leaving Newcastle around 10pm and arriving in Torquay around 7am with a lengthy stop at Birmingham and Bristol. Both of these stops were ripe for a cup of Traveller's Fare strength 5 tea (the spoon stands up straight) from the all-night buffet.

Happy days........... (also compulsive viewing; Fonzie, Richie, Pottsy, Ralph Malph, Mr & Mrs C, Joanie, Arnold)

Blackpool being a nice family resort
Freedom of Scotland being 7 days with no travel restrictions at all (except the boundary of course)
ALRs being a slightly expensive but affordable luxury
More loco hauled trains than you could shake a stick at
Simple fare structure
Second class
Manchester United in division 2
Halloween being just another last autumn night
Mischief night
England actually having a chance of making it past the first round in a major competition (football)
Day returns being available for long journeys (I did Bristol-Edin or Glas quite a few times)
Being disappointed when a 47 turned up on your train
BBC2 9pm Monday night - NTNOCN etc..

And I remember the unfortunately named Pacers too - pretty much the same as opal mints IIRC.

Spent a fair few hours there in my time

and numerous other places away from stations where I used to sit to watch trains that are now several metres behind pallisade fences.
