I saw that and thought it odd that it was newsworthy - considerably longer ore and coal trains are run routinely in Oz to my understanding. Wiki has the record holder as a 100,000 tonne 7.3 km ore train.
Presumably it's because there's nice video to show, or does is there some other significance I'm missing?

Even the video says it is one of the longest ever, not THE longest. I would think that there have been longer grain trains in Western Australia as I have certainly sat at a few level crossings waiting for them to pass!
There are definitely longer ore trains on the Brookfield Rail managed Western Australian network, let alone the monsters they have up on the private iron ore railways of the Pilbara region.

I saw the original version of the article on the ABC website and wondered if it might be worth logging in here again to see if it got a mention.
It is apparently the longest grain train to run in the state of NSW to date, as an attempt by the operator Southern Shorthaul Railroad to lower the overheads on grain transport, since a couple of passing loops were lengthened.
The lower section of the Hunter Valley railway is one of the busiest freight railways in the world with roughly 250 trains per day in each direction. It's mostly coal headed to Kooragang Island and Port Waratah, (same destination for the SSR grain trains) but also grain for Port Waratah, various passenger trains, general/intermodal freight, Freightliner cotton trains to Botany Bay.
There are many other longer trains carrying other commodities operating every day of the week in NSW (including intermodal trains up to 1800 metres, some double stacked, and coal up to 1600 metres) and every other mainland state, and also longer grain trains operating in every other mainland state except Queensland.
The standard maximum train length for the national standard gauge network is 1800 metres, with the exception of Adelaide-Melbourne where there are still a few passing loops to be lengthened before trains longer than 1500 metres can operate.
