Medicals (Different types, reasons for failure etc.)

Hi all.

I want to apply for a position of gateline assistant for SW railway in the future and wanted to know what type of health I would need to be in to pass the medical.

Is the medical you have for a gateline assistant the same as one you might take for a driver for example?

Or is it 'non-safety critical'. ? I noticed for First Great Western it said medical's for gateline assistants and customer service staff are just questionnaire's, so not a full medical like train drivers - is this the same for SW railway?

If it isn't, and it is a full medical, what could mean possible failure?
Sorry for the long post, really curious about this.

The driver medical is more stringent for obvious reasons

The antidepressants shouldn't be a problem. You will be asked what medication you are taking.

BMI not so much a problem, you might get a lecture.

Hi JSB,

I'm not sure what a gateline medical would be like but I'm quite a hefty bloke with a BMI of 36 and it's not stopped me from passing both the Guards and more recently Drivers medicals.
They are also a lot happier if you can show that your doing something to help reduce it. Like excersise and diet.

Some have mentioned an upper BMI limit for drivers but this was due to the size and ergonomics of some of the cabs I'm lead to believe.
